Giants Trounce Cubs, 8 to 1; On Rookie Hurlers Six-Hitter NEW YORK, N. Y., May 2 UP .—Rookie £ George Spencer, a last-minute "hunch" starting choice by manager Leo Durocher, ;r pitched a solid six-hitter today as the New jw York Giants trimmed the Chicago Cubs, s, • to 1, for their third straight victory. Aided by four infield double plays, the tie 24-year-old righthander rewarded Du-rochers a- faith with a brilliant performance. ;e. Spencer allowed only two hits in the last ist five inning and did not permit a runner to to reach second base after yielding the Cubs only run in the fourth. The Giants broke a 1 to 1 tie against tst lefty Johnny Schmitz in the sixth inning ng on Bobby Thomsons double and Al Darks CS single, and then clinched the game with a a six-run outburst in the seventh. Three bases on balls and Ray Nobles eS two-run single drove Schmitz out of the ne box. Darks infield hit on an attempted ed squeeze bunt scored another run. Jack Ma-guires a. three-bagger drove in two more and nd Henry Thompsons single produced the ne final tally off reliefer Warren Hacker.
