It also gave the race what has become a traditional aspect it lacked this year when it projected Calumet Farms Fanfare into the limelight and it may have Probable Derby Field CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 2. — After the running of the Derby Trial here yesterday, the probable starting field for the 1951 renewal of the 00,000 Kentucky Derby narrowed to 20 sophomores. Ponder finished second to Olympia in n V mile run in l:372/5, while Fanfare won n C; the race in 1:36%, which should make him n I I Tl definite starter. The fact :t that he will be saddled by the elder Jones, S, D who has sent out five Derby winners, four x of them for Calumet Farm, will not detract ,£ " from his chances in the "Run for the D Roses." - d Steve Brooks is expected to fly in from " F California to ride the colt, who is a half-05 brother to Coaltown and a son of a Derby ,~ winner. Doug Dodson, who has ridden Fan- fare in his last two winning races, has been I signed to pilot either Hall of Fame or Big J Stretch for Greentree Stable. Dodson was I l not impressed with Fanfare after his sprint victory at Keeneland and any change of t f mind he may have had today came too x i late. I The other Trial horses who can be ex- »- j pected to start in the Derby, in the order v in which they finished in the mile, are re r Cary Boshamers King Clover, Brownell ill ] Combs Bernwood, Cain Hoy Stables Battle ile r Morn, Brown Hotel Stables The Gink and id Spring Brook Farms Pur Sang, who was as j far back, but didnt appear to be abused. d. King Clover, who was tiring when he he j bothered Bernwood in the steretch, has as t been announced as a definite Derby starter, *r. j Bernwood has been rather lightly raced ed i and is showing steady improvement. Battle Morn ran a powerful race, coming from literally nowhere at the head of the he stretch. More significant, perhaps, was the he *act tnat Battle Morn did not drift out hi in ] the final furlong after being taken around id ; horses. If anything, he came in slightly hi in ] the run to the wire and he was going fast- t- est of all at the end. | The other colts and geldings in the Trial, al, ; with the possible exception of Pur Sang, ig. j seemed to have rather completely elim- n- j inated themselves from the Derby, though gh Mrs. Fred Sharpe and George Gerber, ; owners of Kings Hope and Spur On, have Ve indicated a firm determination to have a a ; starter in the rich event. The lengthy list of Derby candidates who did not race yesterday afternoon can be be divided into the probable and the possibles, jf The probables are Greentree Stables Big Stretch and Hall of Fame, C. V. Whitneys y»s Mameluke and Counterpoint, Mrs. Nora ,ra Mikells Repetoire, Mrs. Wallace Gilroys y s Timely Reward, Mrs. Emil Denemarks k s Ruhe, King Ranchs Sonic, Jack Amiels »ls Count Turf and Sam E. Wilson, Jr.s Royal /al Mustang. Repetoire and Royal Mustang were put through their paces again this morning. Repetoire, who was sent a slow extended gj trial yesterday, equipped with iodine, was senk another mile and a furlong in 1:56 :56 this morning, merely breezing, and looked :ed as good as he has all spring. Royal Mus- is- tang, who showed marked improvement at at Keeneland, stepped seven furlongs in a a rather sparkling 1:27%. He was also in in hand throughout the prep. Last night, ht, owner Sam E. Wilson, Jr., indicated that lat he plans starting both Royal Mustang and Golden Birch in the Derby, while there has ias never been any doubt about Repetoire. The possibilities are Brown Hotel Stables les Snuzzle, W. C. Martins Phil D., William auj Peaveys Anyoldtime and Sir Bee Bum and ind Herman Bryant, Jr.s Tiger Harris. The The latter has been definitely reported as ship-not ip- ping in from Chicago, but whether he will be a starter or not is a matter of conjec-his ec_ ture. Of the possibles, only Phil D., a graduate ate of Colorado racing and winner of the San J5 Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita, had showed enough recently to warrant the ,000 [ ?0 starting fee. His race in the Blue Grass, , in in which he finished second between Mameluke ne- and Hall of Fame, was a decided improvement m- over other recent efforts.
