Crown Me Returns to His Best Form TRisk A Whirl Is Second at Camden Morgan Gelding Responds To Petersons Urging in Stretch Run to Gain Honors By WILLIAM PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J„ May 2. — T. P. Morgans Crown Me, a four-year-old Half Crown gelding who has shown dull form in all four of his previous races this year, this afternoon came forth with one of his better performances and responded gallantly for the stretch drive of the featured 902 Special to defeat M. Kahlbaums Risk A Whirl by three-quarters of a length. Mel Peterson rode the heavily muscled chestnut, and allowed him to rear out slightly toward Risk A Whirl in the last stages of the race, gradually forcing that one wide while she slowly gave way after having reached the front entering the final furlong. Grandview Stables Clean Broom gave a surprisingly speedy effort to be well placed throughout and was third, two and one-half lengths farther behind. A blustery but pleasant breeze and clear skies were enjoyed by a crowd of 15,277 who witnessed Crown Me capture the one mile and a sixteenth feature in the time of 1:45%. Of those who collected tickets on his victory, the majority were backing the chances Of T. G. Bensons Thirty Love, with whom he was coupled as an entry. The latter raced well out in the middle of the track throughout, however, and finished eighth in the field of 10. Convidado Favorite King Ranchs Convidado, winner of a race here last week, was made the favorite. The Eight Thirty gelding was blocked attempting to move to the leaders after the start, and he then just would not try to run- ;- The ultimate winner saved ground under nice handling by Peterson, and never was n more than a half-length away from the ss Pace. He moved into a short advantage at the half-mile to take command from the fading Golden Bull, and was not hurried of ■ when Risk A Whirl made her bid from !- the outside on the final bend. She moved up fast when urged, but after showing •- briefly in front, could not draw clear and be e then weakened in the crucial test. i, Harborvale Stables two-year-old Mobile t- Belle "mobiled" along pretty good to take g a three-length victory over six filly rivals s in the fifth race, which was styled the 9 Walt Whitman. Charlie Chaffin held her s in restraint while close to the pace being [- set by Happy Hill Farms Blue Mirage, but 1- he hustled her energetically and was taking no chances in the final run to the wire. •7 Blue Mirage lugged in and closed a pas-is sage for King Ranchs Melodic mid-le stretch, forcing that one to take back £• sharply. Arthur Stone sent Melodic forts ward again next to the rail, but she was a a unable to overhaul Blue Mirage and was :~ a half-length behind while finishing third.
