I., N. Y., May 9.— Merritt C. "Happy" Buxton, veteran owner-trainer and former rider who was the leading jockey in this country in 1913 and rode for the nobility in many Euro- pean countries, including the Czar of Rus-i sia, passed away at 7 oclock this morn- ing at the home of his brother at 188-34 87th Drive, Jamaica, Long Island. Buxton, who always lived up to his nickname of Happy, was 61 years of age. Although sev-3 eral years have passed since his days as a rider, he always remained small and only increased weight during his middle-age. Buxton has been ill since the death of his wife in May of last year, and only re- cently returned from a visit to specialists at the Mayo Clinic. Horsemen and officials in this sector particularly mourn his pass- ing. He had raced his own horses and a public stable in New Jersey for a number of years, and was the vice-president of the New Jersey division of the Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Association. He is survived by his son, M. A. Buxton, who recently retired from riding and is training a stable at Garden State Park. He departed immediately for Long Island, in company with William C. Charles, Jr., secretary-treasurer of the New Jersey division of the Horsemens Benevolent and Protec-" tive Association, to make arrangements for the funeral, which will be held on Saturday morning from the Fairchild Funeral Home, Queens Village, L. I.
