Six Three-Year-Old Fillies Test Speed Merry Xmas and Other Oaks Candidates Among Field in Jamaicas Shamrock Purse JAMAICA, L. I., N. Y., May 9.— Half a dozen three-year-old fillies, four of whom are engaged in the Coaching Club American Oaks to be run at Belmont Park for the championship of the age and sex on June 2, have been named to dispute the featured Shamrock Purse at Jamaica tomorrow. The stake candidates in this six-furlong dash are Cresson Farms Betty Lamar, Brookfield Farms Inanabout, Mrs. Esther duPont Weirs Merry Xmas and Howell E. Jacksons Up Early. Of this group, all but Up Early are also eligible to the Acorn Stakes to be renewed at Belmont Park on May 23. They will be opposed by C. Isidor Biebers My Bebby and Apheim Stables Rampallion. Merry Xmas is the only one of this field to have already won a stake. The daughter of Roman — Yuletide captured the Polly Drummond at Delaware Park last June and also won an overnight race in a brief campaign of five starts. Before going wrong in mid-summer, she was reported to have consistently outworked Northern Star, who was later sold for something like 5,000 to Greentree Stable. Northern Star has been unable to win for his new owner, but Merry Xmas also showed little in her only start here this spring, finishing fifth in a dash won by Betty Lamar on April 26. Up Early Won Only 1950 Start Up Early, a daughter of Sun Again — P. T. Boat, won her only start last year, an overnight affair, and is making her seasonal bow. She is reported to be training well and looked good at Aiken, S. C, where she wintered. Inanabout could finish no better than fourth behind the speedy Heliowise in her only local start, but comes from a dangerous barn and may have needed that race. My Bebby won here as recently as yesterday, but was carrying a 0,000 claiming tag. However, she is a speedy sort and ran well in stake company at times last year. Rampallion showed nothing in a dash won by Roman Wise last week. Eddie Arcaro will ride Merry Xmas, who will have considerable support for that reason and because of her known class. No rider has been named for Betty Lemar. George Hettinger will be on Up Early; Ira Hanford pilots Inanabout; Bennie Green will again be on My Bebby, and no rider has been assigned Rampallion at the moment. The Shamrock is followed by another sprint for fillies and mares named the Rose dOr, in which W. J. Lenihans September gets a chance to make amends for her recent dubious showing. Ted Atkinson, a well-known amender, will be in the saddle. She will be opposed by Aprisa, Our Patrice, Sickle Flight, Lotus Blossom and Abbie Co. Our Patrice appears the most dangerous.
