Field of Speedsters Vies In Sportsmans Offering Rose Bed, Encantadora, Pad Lock And Connies Boy Match Strides SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111., May 9. — A speed contest at five furlongs will feature tomorrows program at this half-mile track and will give Rose Bed, co-record-holder for the distance, a chance to redeem herself following two recent defeats. The VanBerg mare, second to Bally-dam in her last outing, is unlikely to be better than third choice in the wagering as she will tangle with a couple of fit racers, Hilltop Stock Farms Pad Lock, and Ed Lanes Encantadora. Others to make a race of it are Mrs. J. Rogers Texas Rain, Fancy Free Stables Jimmys Doll, Mrs. H. P. Bon ners Dina Bam, and M. VanBergs Connies Boy. The latter will be coupled with Rose Bed. The race will be known as the Whirl-away. Encantadora, on lease from the King Ranch, has a clean slate at the meeting, having won her only start when she triumphed in the May Day Purse. Previous to that she had won three straight races, one at Oaklawn Park, and two at New Orleans. She will therefore, be going for her fifth consecutive victory. Pad Lock, after finishing second to Phantom Sea, and third to Illustrate and Richavoo, trimmed Grey-town, Connies Boy and Dina Bam last out Texas Rain was fifth in a six-horse race won by Hypostyle in his only start, while Jimmys Doll was beaten off in his last start. Nowloggin, a four-year-old who has surprised almost everyone in winning his three starts at the meeting, will be shooting to tie Yales record of fo.ur successes here when he goes in the seventh race. The Ed Luther colorbearer paid better than 10 to 1 in each victory.
