Special Touch Topweight On Scale for Premiere Crofton Filly Is Assigned 122 to Coaltowns 126 and Citations 120 HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif., May 9. — Although she receives a concession of four actual pounds each from Calumet Farms Coaltown, James N. Croftons flashy four-year-old filly Special Touch is topweighted on the scale for the 5,000 Premiere Handicap which will highlight the Hollywood Turf Clubs inaugural program on Friday. Coaltown, twice conqueror of the filly during the latter part of the recent Bay Meadows meeting, drew 126 pounds and Special Touch, 122. On the scale, she is allowed five pounds for her sex and two for her age, as against the older Coaltown, and she thus is conceding a theoretical three pounds. On the last day of the meeting Coaltown, receiving a pound actual weight from Special Touch, beat her two lengths in the Childrens Hospital Handicap at three-quarters of a mile, the same distance over which the Premiere will be contested. He ran the six furlongs of that 5,000 feature in 1:10 on a dull track and that is only two-fifths of a second off the track record. Coaltown and Special Touch met earlier in the 5,000 Art Sparks Handicap and on that occasion he had three pounds of actual weight the better of it and beat her a nose at the same distance. The Art Sparks Handicap proved to be one of the most thrilling spectacles of the entire Bay Meadows meeting, for Coaltown and Special Touch battled each other head-and-head over the entire distance and at the wire it took a photograph to confirm his victory. In her two winning races at the San Mateo track, Special Touch accounted for the Inaugural Handicap and the Alameda. Coaltown made his first public appearance in the North in the Alameda, but he was soundly beaten. Coaltown is expected to be a certain starter in the Premiere, but Special Touch has had a pretty busy winter and spring campaign and may pass up that event. Coaltowns stablemate, the illustrious Citation, is rated third on the list of weights with an assignment of 120 pounds. He finished third in each of two six-furlong preps late in the Bay Meadows season and with those two conditioners under his girth, he may be ready to return to winning form. The worlds greatest money-earning thoroughbred will enter Fridays engagement with lifetime gleanings of 39,460, and if he is at or near his best form it may be right here at Hollywood Park that he attains the million-dollar mark before he is sent into permanent retirement.
