Amphora Scores in Sophomore Bow Hits Finish Line Clear of Algerian Favored Widener Homebred Filly Under Drive to Take Lead on Turn at Belmont BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y„ June 11. — George D. Wideners Amphora, who was making her first start since she finished unplaced in the Spinaway at Saratoga last August, led from soon after the start of the featured Sheila Purse today, reaching the end of the seven furlongs a length and a .half before Wheatley Stables Algerian, who led Woodvale Farms favored Be Modest another half length. Maine Chance Farms Belle Amie finished four lengths farther back and her jockey, Bennie Green promptly claime dfoul against Keith Stuart and Conn McCreary, who rode Alyerian and Be Modest. He had no complaint against George Hettinger, who piloted Amphora. It appeare tdhat Belle Amie had carried Be Modest wide at the head of the stretch, then had been squeezed between Algerian, who bore out, and Be Modest, who came in near the eighth pole. After viewing the movies, the stewards edciedd that Green was merely wasting their time and that of the public. Amphora paid .70, being heavily backed on the strength of sparkling trials, and stepped the seven furlongs in a creditable 1:24%. Chilly Weather A crowd of 22,110 turned out in overcast, chilly weather. Favorite players and those equipped with topcoats fared reasonably well. Amphora is a daughter of Bull Lea — Tedmelia, thus a half-sister to Lights Up and the good steeplechaser, Flying Wing. She won her debut last year, a maiden race, then was unplaced in the Schuyler-ville and Spinaway, her only other two starts at two. Amphora was third out*of the gate today, behind Bold Irish and Algerian, who were coupled. Guiding took command a few strides farther on, just a head before Amphora, while Bold Irish was another head away to the far turn, where she dropped back. Belle Amie moved into fourth place, and eB Modest began to come into contention on the outside. Rounding the big curve. Amphora took command, putting Guilding away above the head of the stretch and opening a daylight lead a few strides farther on. As Guiding fell back, Be Modest surged up on the outside, but was carried wide by Belle Amie, while Algerian saved ground,-then began to bear out. While Amphora went about her business down the middle of the track, Algerian, Be Modest and Belle Amie engaged in their brief scuffle passing the eighth pole, with Belle Amie being snatched up when it seemed that she was already beaten.
