4 Hall of Fame Impressive Winner of Kent Stakes Greentree Runner Beats Alerted By Six Lengths With Atkinson Up By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent DELAWARE PARK. Stanton. Del.. June 23. — Joining the already large group of three-year-old stakes winners this season, Greentree Stables Hall of Fame this afternoon scored an impressive six-length victory in the fourteenth running of the mile and one-sixteenth Kent Stakes. Hampton Stables Alerted was second, just a neck before Frank A. Bonsais improved Mully S., with Al-Jo Stables Gray Matter earning fourth money. Badly beaten in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, and forced to pass up the Belmont due to his being a gelding, the dark bay son of Shut Out was ridden by Ted Atkinson and covered the distance in 1:45% over a track labeled slow. Slight favorite at .80 with the crowd of approximately 18,500, Hall of Fame completed a double in the event for the Greentree menage, which won the 1949 running with Wine List. The victory was worth 3,300 and sent Hall of Fames earnings for the year to 1,050. The 13 -horse field — Loridale and Irritate were scratched from the overnight line-up — left the gate in good alignment, with Alan Clarkes Senator Joe outsprinting the opposition and escaping the inevitable crowding rounding the clubhouse turn. Chief sufferer in the rush to the elbow was Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Yildiz. who was forced quite wide after being shuffled back. Senator Joe continued to hold sway along the backstretch, pursued by F. Ambrose Clarks Acefull, Mrs. E. duPonts Weirs Koritza and Mrs. Nora Mikells Repetoire, who were racing heads apart. With the majority of the leaders faltered leaving the three-eighths pole, Dave Gorman sent Repetoire to the front as Atkinson advanced Hall of Fame from sixth to third position, and then into the runner-up spot nearing the stretch. Repetoire, again showing that he is primarily a sprinter, gave way without too much battle, allowing Hall of Fame to take over the lead. Turning into the stretch, however, Hall of Fame showed a tendency Jo drift out and "Atky boy," realizing that it would do his mount no harm to race over the better going, took no severe action. While the Greentree gelding steadily in-Continued on Page Six Hall of Fame Impressive Winner of Kent Stakes Greentree Runner Beats Alerted By Six Lengths With Atkinson Up Continued from Page One creased his lead, Repetoire "threw in the sponge" and faded badly, as Alerted, who had finished third in the Preakness and second in the Yankee Handicap last Monday at Suffolk Downs, further impressed as a sturdy colt by charging from ninth position to wear down his rivals and finish second. Mully S., making his initial stake appearance, also turned in a commendable effort, coming from next to last in the large field to be wearing down Alerted in the final strides. Gray Matter, in finishing fourth, gave further evidence that he was a standout claim for 2,500. While Yildiz could do no better than finish ninth in the Kent, his effort was not a discouraging one, for he had more than his share of trouble. In addition to being carried wide early, he was impeded when beaten. It was, however, a tough race for the colt in what was his first start since winning the Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah in early March.
