First Night Races in 1883 Night trotting races, generally believed to be a modern innovation, actually began in Willimantic, Conn., on October 5, 1883. when a full program was conducted under 48 arc lights. The first Grand Circuit program under lights was held in 1929 at Toledo, and it was here where Sep Palin drove Star Etawah for the first 2:00 mile in night racing.
