J., June 23. — Greentree Stables Northern Star, the only member of todays Select Handicap field who has previously won a stake race, relished the sloppy condition of the racing strip and convincingly drew out under pressure in the stretch run to capture the fourth running of the 0,000 fixture by two and one-half lengths. William G. Helis, Jr.s Roman Fair, with whom he dead-heated in his last start at Delaware Park, was second in the small field of! seven, and led the third horse, Jay CeeJ Farms Pattys Day, by better than four1 lengths. Northern Star was a popular victor with the 18,279 patrons who were comfortably accommodated at this spacious seashore course and he paid .60. Time for the three-year-old England-bred colt, a son of Mirza II. — Venus, by Gold Bridge, was 1:11%, accomplished under a nominal 114 pounds. His capable rider, Fernando Fernandez, handled the task smoothly and was scoring his second success of the day. The weather was clear for the running of the races, but early morning rains thoroughly drenched the racing strip. The course was termed sloppy, with a generous mixture of sand and water covering a solid bottom. The winner and the second horse were two of the four contestants who were "corked" for the off track. Stables First Stake Victory at Monmouth The victory of Northern Star was a long-awaited achievement for the powerful Greentree Stable. Although its familiar pink and black silks have won nearly every important i race in the country, this was the j first time in six years of endeavor that they have captured a stake at this course. The public was probably influenced in their i correct choice in the betting by noting i that the last time Northern Star ran over a sloppy track that he defeated such capable colts as Crafty Admiral, Platoon i and Big Stretch while winning the United States Hotel Stakes last summer at Saratoga. • He also won the Flash Stakes and * finished second to Battlefield in the Saratoga Special. His ,175 share of todays purse increased his total earnings to 9.-050. Northern Star, not too impressive this 3 year, started six times prior to todays race z and was victorious once. A tight tussle for the early lead developed when starter Eric Blind sent them on their way. but Buzzing Bee and Sea Flash t dropped back on the turns, allowing Roman J Flash to emerge from between them and J take command. Northern Star, lapped on him on .he outside, was carried wide by his r rival into the stretch, but unmindful of the interference, i went about his business with, j authority and drew out. Brookmeade Stables Greek Ship scored ] his first victory of the season, as was very i much expected, when he captured the supporting feature, a mile and one-sixteenth 1 allowance affair presented after the i Select. Picador, who may have been best j i nthis race, came fast at the end to be j second and make it a one-two finish for 1 the Brookmeade colors. Time for the race a was 1:47J5 and Fernando Fernandez again i was the winning jockey, making it three 1 for the day.
