Gains Third Straight Tally While Defeating Belfaster By Margin of Four Lengths By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 25.— - Wheatley Stables Hilarious won his third straight at this meeting and his first stake when he played with seven rivals in the ; 60th running of the Tremont today. The handsome bay son of Bimelech — Laughter, , by Johnstown, coasted under the wire four widening lengths before Edward Potter, Jr.s, Belfaster, who finished strongly on the rail. S. P. Stecklers Fort Salonga finished another two lengths away after heading • the winner at the top of the stretch, • while Ogden Phipps Torch of War was another length out of the money, after being squeezed back at the far turn by Fort I Salonga. Eric Guerin rode Hilarious, who paid I .40 and was timed in 1 :05%, just the fractions slower than his time on June 20 when 1 he was a bit more seriously extended. Hilarious made his debut at Belmont Park I on June 4 and raced obscurely behind 1 Jamie K. He came out on his home track c five days later and finished second to his J stablemate, Torch of War. Since then he has won three races in 11 days and the j ,975 gleaned today brought his earnings s I to 6,300. The Tremont for whom todays 3 stake was named, won 13 races in eight weeks back in 1886 and Hilarious is now 7 setting the same pace. In any case, the 3 homebred colt now ranks with Native 2 Dancer and Tahitian King as the best of f the .youngsters seen on Long Island. Still Learning to Run After the Tremont, Guerin said of Hilarious, "Hes still learning to run." Trainers s of rivals can be pardoned for hoping hes s not a rapid student. Dark Royal went to the front at the start of the Tremont, closely followed by Hilarious, Torch of War and Fort Salonga. Near-ing the far turn. Fort Salonga charged up on the leaders, brushing Torch of War as he did so and causing that colt to drop back abruptly. Dark Royal dropped back a few strides later, while Belfaster began to move up rapidly along the rail. Hilarious and Fort Salonga raced around the turns to the stretch as a team, with Fort Salonga appearing to shove his head in front as they neared the quarter pole. Guerin roused Hilarious at this point and the favorite responded by bounding away from his rivals as though they were rooted. He was taken in stride near the finish as he coasted to the wire with long, smooth, apparently effortless strides. Belfaster, who saved considerable ground, finished willingly and had no great trouble taking second money from Fort Salonga, who was second choice in the wagering, while never threatening the winner. Torch of War recovered well and finished strongly. None of the others, apart from the brief flash of Dark Royal, were ever in contention. Favorites rewarded the form players in the races immediately preceding the Tremont. Ethel D. Jacobs Susan Dear led all the way in the fourth, reaching the end of the seven furlongs more than two lengths before Harry LaMontagnes Europa, who chased her all the way, then lost ground at the head of the stretch by going outside of the pacemaker, who was already bearing out. Susan Dear paid .20, after having been 1 to 2 on the infield board. A heavy play on Starmount Stables By Right, who failed to raise a respectable gallop, sent the favorites odds soaring. Sam Boulmetis piloted Susan Dear. Abe The Mad Rooter Levinsons Gold Heel and Nosun ran one, two in the fifth event and did it so handily that clubhouse spectators were deprived of their customary entertainment, their owner saving his enthusiasm for a closer finish.
