PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent " MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J., June 25. — Jockey Teddy Atkinson made the trip to Monmouth Park today and garnered the spoils in the sixth renewal of the Rumson Handicap astride Greentree Sta-. bles Northern Star, who previously had been unable to win a race in 11 starts this year. The Irish-bred four-year-old winner was to have been coupled with Greentrees Tom Fool, but the latter was declared this morning. Northern Star scampered the six fur- longs over a fast track, which appeared in better shape than at any previous time during the meeting, in 1:10%. He was roused by an occasional whip lash through the stretch and drew out by two and a half lengths over Alan T. Clarkes Senator Joe. Brookmeade Stables War King was lapped on him in third place, and held a half-length over Mrs. Louis Lazares fa-t vored Sheilas Reward. The champion sprinter of the country the last two years never was a serious factor and his bow in the left front leg got to him as he pulled i up lame after the finish. A crowd of 12,831 sweltering patrons ■ made Northern Star third choice in the I wagering, and he returned 1.20. The vic- ~ tors wealth was increased by 3,250 of the 8,000 gross purse. Atkinson in Splendid Ride Ted Atkinson arrived from New York and i rode the Irish-bred colt to perfection. i. Breaking from the inside stall, he had I Northern Star well up in contention from the beginning, with Alan T. Clarkes Senator Joe, Carolyn K. Stables Hi Billie, Marlboro Stud Farms Jet Master and H. A. Kimballs Algasir all "wing-dinging" it attempting to reach the front going down the e backstretch. Senator Joe drew clear on the turn, with £ Hi Billie remaining right on his heels and Northern Star began to move up next to the e rail. The top pair came slightly wide into o the stretch, giving Atkinson plenty of room n on the rail. He quickly made use of it and rushed to *he front, with his advantage f steadily increasing in the run to the wire. " Joseph Gavegnanos Fighting Fleet won ™ his first race in five starts this year under a smooth, confident ride by Fernando Fernandez ;_ ■ that brought the six-year-old to the finish of the fourth race a handy victor by y three and a half lengths over Potato Chip p Farms Bimfort. Paul L. Kelleys Sea Grass, 3 prepping for the Monmouth Handicap on n Saturday, was another 11 lengths behind in n third place, followed by River Divide Farms -s Giggle and J. J. McCarthys Ginger Boots. 5 The last named was coupled as an entry y" with Fighting Fleet and he performed his [S job well forcing a fast early pace for Fighting _ Fleet to come from behind. Due to the smallness of the field, no show N wagering was conducted. Fighting Fleet and d his mate were third choice and paid .00, while Bimfort was held at even money.
