The good folk of this territory will see a truly fine racer in the son of Attention. We have seen few thoroughbreds run a better race than did the Helis flyer on the day he he took took the the Gallant Gallant ■■■■■■■■■■■-■■■«■■ he he took took the the Gallant Gallant Fox Handicap at Jamaica and that goes for Phar Lap, Seabiscuit, and Noor, and back to Exterminator and Man o War. Spartan Valor has yet to prove conclusively that he has the quality of those fine runners, but he can sprint or go a distance, carry weight and perform on any sort of racing strip and may develop into a thoroughbred to be remembered. Like Seabiscuit, the four-year-old is coming around a trifle late as most "top" horses are good at three and go on from there. Spartan Valor was no great shakes last year. He won three stakes, two at six furlongs and 1 one at one mile and 70 yards, in New Jersey. We had him tabbed as strictly a sprinter and placed him third in the balloting i for the Sprinter of the Year. He earned 3,575. This year he has already amassed 75,900. Seabiscuit, as a three-year-old, earned 8,995, and as a four-year-old i 68,580. Ex-jockey Prank Catrone, now a rotund and balding man, has turned in a ! wonderful job on Spartan Valor, and naturally owner Helis is mighty proud, as the colt was bred at Helis stock farm. New Jerseys favorite jockey, Jimmy Stout, a gentlemanly little man, has ridden Spartan Valor in all his important races and will ] be in from Monmouth Park to accept the mount Saturday. Sam E. Wilson Jr., who has a number of horses in training here, arrived from his home in Corpus Christi, Texas... Frank Rosen, owner of the Palatine Stable, is due in from New York this weekend. . .The good two-year-old filly, Bid"~ Jane, has been shipped back to Detroit in company with her stable companions, Silver Jet and Battle Hero. Biddy Jane was hit by the coughing epidemic. . .This track could use more horses in the ,500-,000 claiming brackets. . .Milton Resseguet has purchased OGive and Chariot Wheels from William Hal Bishop, while J. L. Younghusband acquired the eight-year-old Bullish from Mrs. Emil Denemark. . .Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Curran, of San Francisco, stopped over for a few days of the sport. We like our heroes a bit more responsive | than was Eddie Arcaro on the occasion of * his 3,000th victory. With several thousand d racing patrons giving him a standing ovation, " he failed to acknowledge the greeting " with a tip of the cap as those baseball 11 fellows do when they smack a home run. l- Eddie took it all in stride, but we fear he e carried modesty to an extreme when he e made light of his feat in a jockeys room a statement. We would prefer to have seen 11 Eddie a bit more enthusiastic. His remarks s failed to reveal much pride in personal ll achievement. We like to see them take the e Continued on Page Forty-Five , t — ■— ■■■ *pwww *— — ■ ■ ■■— ■ »i Arlington Notebook By J. J. MURPHY Continued from Page Three bows even if it is, in some circles, regarded as rather hammy. Arcaro will have a day in his honor here Saturday and Jimmy Durante, who, like Eddie, is noted for his proboscis, has consented to act as master of ceremonies. And to straighten out the matter of Eddies birthplace, he says he was born in Newport, Ky., not Cincinnati. He should know, he was there. A large party of Memphis, Tenn.. sportsmen en route to Idaho for some salmon fishing, stopped off for a day of racing. In the gathering were General Everett R. Cook, John S. Williams, Dunbar Alston, Alfred B. Pittman, Thomas Semmes, Julian B. Bondurant, Richard Leatherman, and Dudley Weaver. They were the guests of John D. Allen, president of Arlington Park. . David Toochin, owner of the Cherry -Oca Stable, has sent word that he will be on hand for the running of the Stars and Stripes Handicap, July 4. He has Tio Ciro, who finished second to To Market in the Massachusetts Handicap, in the event . . . William H. Bishop has purchased Army Conscript from Rainbow Ranch, while Nick P. Dispenza bought Sky Ranger from W. J. Schmidt. The latter will continue as trainer. The three-year-old, Dance Nsing, owned by the Buddah Stable of Dave Paper, of St. Paul, Minn., will not be seen in action again for some time. X-ray reveals that the colt suffered a fractured hock when injured j in his stall a few hours before he was to have started in the Warren Wright Memorial. Dance Nsing, an ,000 purchase, finished second to Gushing Oil in the J Peabody Memorial Jack Drees, of the Arlington publicity staff, journeyed to J Detroit to broadcast the Chico Vejar-Chuck Davie boxing match. He was expected * to be back on the job Thursday. . . • Apprentice Ronnie Baldwin has been engaged to ride Torch of Iran in both the I Equipoise Mile and the Stars and Stripes Handicap... The three-year-old Shag r Tails, who was a starter in the Warren : Wright Memorial, has been sent back to Detroit.
