Tom Fool Works Sensational Six Furlongs in 1:10; Hows Tricks, Mainsail, Incidentally Also Drill BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., June 20. — Greentree Stables Tom Fool turned in the most sensational trial of recent years at Belmont Park this morning. The handsome son of Menow, who is pointing for next Saturdays seven-furlong Carter Handicap, whirled six furlongs in 1:10, which is just a fifth of a second slower than the track record and equals the best time turned in any race here in the past two years. Ted Atkinson was in the saddle and was not required to ask the Metropolitan and Suburban winner for any great effort as he -reeled off fractions of :22%, :33%, :45% and five furlongs in :51%. Weights for the Carter are due on Monday, with Tom Fool certain to be heavily burdened. When Atkinson rode back after the trial, trainer John Gaver remarked with satisfaction: "Looks like we might have a pretty good horse here." An enthusiastic work-watcher observed that when Atkinson took hold of Tom Fool at the sixteenth pole, "you could have put a piano- in his mouth when he finished/ Apprised of remark, Atkinson agreed that it was apt. "If you didnt call it a handy work, youd have to call it breezing," Sir Theodore said. "I never really asked him tor do his best, never hit him, -and I dont believe I even shook the stick at him. It was the fastest I have ever worked a horse and you could hardly really call it work." Greentrees Hows Tricks, who is engaged in Wednesdays Gazelle Stakes at a mile and a sixteenth, stepped seven furlongs in 1:28%, just breezing, while the same stables Mainsail, a candidate for the Astoria Stakes on June 29, was most impressive as she went five furlongs in 1:00% in handy style. She was not fully extended. Maine Chance Farms unbeaten Incidentally, who is the likely favorite for the Astoria, was under a strong hold as she breezed five furlongs in 1:00%, while her stablemate, Fascinator, breezed a half in :49Vand. She, too, is in ih« Astoria.
