Candidate-Teddy Chick Duo in River Downs Race Former Has Won His Last Three Starts; Name Seven to Face Entry By R. E. HURLEY Staff Correspondent RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 20. — The tempo of racing picks up at this track as the 44-day meeting settles into its third week with the fourth renewal of the Queen City Handicap at a mile and a furlong, scheduled for decision next Saturday. The Queen City is for ,500 this season and is the harbinger of later, richer and longer stakes-racing at River Downs. In addition, Thursday is Indiana Day at the Downs, with a large turnout of Hoosier racing fans expected. Ed C. Bunting has again named his "Gold JDust Twins," Candidate and Teddy Chick, for an allowance sprint, which tops the Monday card. Seven other interests are aligned against the Bunting one-two punch in an effort to stop the skein of Candidate, which now has run to three straight. The Blue dOr — Scarlet Insco gelding lias won his, last three starts and boasts the impressive record of five wins in seven starts this season while unplaced but once. The Bunting entry will be matched against Mrs. J. Nobles Essential, E. A. Bischoffs Mels Best, Mrs.j. L. McKnight and L. J. McKnights Gold Lust, Mrs. L. Freys Best Air, Creel Browns Sonny Brown, J. G. Madleners Gilded Right, and R. J. Hamons My Accident. These worthies present Candidate with his toughest field locally and a combination of circumstances may cut the geldings streak. Candidate must break from the inside post position and will not have his regular rider, Billy Clark,- in the irons. Clark is cooling his heels under a 10-day suspension and no rider has been named on Candidate overnight. Mels Best, Best Air, My Accident and Sonny Brown are high speed horses that might outbreak the Bunting racer and hem him in along the inside and will certainly press the pace to their utmost. Mels Best is in the race with a feathery 106 and outstepped some fast horses in his last outing. Best Air also showed back to his stellar Wheeling Downs form in his last race behind Cavalier Trim and would like to nail Candidates scalp. Bunting has been naming his twins to most of these allowance races and scratching one on race day. He is again expected to lift one from the entries and we have ■ the premonition that it will be Candidate.
