Slight Gains Registered at Belmont Handle Averages j ,063,392 Daily Crowds Up 164 Per Day; Nashuas Easy Victory Is Highlight; Wheatley Leader Nashua, the playboy of Belair, toyed ■with his opposition in the 87th edition of the rich Belmont Stakes as the big, wrought iron gates of Belmont Park closed its Golden Anniversary meeting last Saturday. The nations largest racing plant opened in damp, raw weather April 25, with 20,-177 fans on hand for a run of 42 days. A total of 1,020,611 patrons- bet 6,662,463 on the 42 stellar programs and produced a slight increase in dally average -attendance and wagering over the corresponding 42-day session in 1954. The crowds were up 164 per diem; the handle 74; the exact figures reading 24,300 to 24,136 last year and ,063,392 to ,063,218 for 1954 in patronage and betting, respectively. Nashua moved into sixth place on the all-time money-winning thoroughbred list by virtue of the Belmont Stakes 3,700 capital award. The Belair three-year-olds total earnings to date are 53,690, and only Citation, Stymie, Armed, Native Dancer and Assault, in order, are in front of him. Assaults fifth-place earnings are 75,470, so Nashua stands an excellent chance to move into fifth position in his next engagement if he retains his present sharpness. Ahead of Citation at Corresponding Period Victory in The Belmont also gave Nashua top honors for the meeting in the money-won department, and a considerable spread over Citation, turfs only "millionaire" at a corresponding period of his career. Citations total after he won The Belmont was "only" 44,700. While Nashua finished ahead of Wheat-ley Stables High Voltage for money-winning laurels, the latter establishment finished ahead of its "sister" Belair string among the money-winning owners, 06,-980 to 1,725. "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons trains for both stables and his 19 successes with the, charges he sent postward at Belmont netted him the training title. In the jockey standings, it was Ted Atkinson atop the list by a goodly margin over Eddie Arcaro, 45 victories to 29 for the latter veteran. Atkinson accepted .223 mounts to Arcaros 138 saddle appearances for percentages of .20 and .21, respectively. On May 20, Atkinson booted home four winners. Among the steeplechase riders, it, as usual, was Frank "Dooley" Adams, showing the way. Adams nosed out F. Schulhofer by one winner, seven to. six, the perennial leader being up 28-times to the latters 22. Helioscope Suburban Winner William Helis, Jr.s Helioscope captured the second richest stakes of the successful session. That would be the Suburban, which featured the big Memorial Day program. Helioscopes victorious share of the historic fixture was 1,150. The historic Metropolitan fell to King Ranchs High Gun. High Voltage won two stakes, first the Acorn, then the Coaching Club American Oaks, third richest stake of the meeting. Two track records were broken and one world record equaled, the latter achievement also being the equivalent of the Belmont standard for the distance. Wheatley Stables Misty Morn ran the mile and one-sixteenth in 1:42 flat in scoring an easy triumph in the Locust Valley Handicap for fillies and mares May 27. Ridden by Atkinson, Misty Morn came on in the stretch to win by five lengths and eclipse the old mark of lA2V5, set by Dot, September 7, 1953. Poxcatcher Farms Parlo, best three-year-old and handicap filly of 1954, then cracked Misty Morns mark by running the mile and a sixteenth in 1:41% in scoring an easy three-length triumph in the 16th - • - c ai aoc nnn « J ,1*3 rn__ f running Ol LIlc a,uuu-auucu jluij JC11BJ.1U Handicap, June 8. Parlo was given a smart ride by Eric Guerin. Reneged, a two-year-old son of Revoked, making only the third start of his career, equaled the Belmont Park and world record of :49% seconds for the four and one-half furlongs in a juvenile event down the Widener straightaway, June 7. The Pimpernel set the record May 17, 1951. Reneged, owned by Woodley Lane Farm, was ridden by Paul J. Bailey. On the somewhat sad side, sentimentally, was the first defeat suffered by Boston Doge. The speedy colts victory string of 10 straight without a previous defeat was snapped in the 5,500 Swift Stakes, April 30. Guerin, who rode Boston Doge to triumph in the Bahamas, Experimental and Governors Gold Cup stakes this season, whipped the Paul Andolino charge frantically int th§ ,stre|ch.ebut Boston Doge. was six and a half lengths behind Nances Lad at the end of seven furlongs. A crowd of 40,368 had backed Boston Doge down to 1 to 5. Guerin blamed the off track for Boston Doges defeat, although the colt scored his first stakes victory on a sloppy strip, taking the Newport at Narragansett last fall.
