LIMIT FIELDS TO TWELVE LOUISVILLE. Ky., May 1.— The following announcement was made this afternoon by Judge Charles F. Price, presiding steward in charge of racing: "The fields in purse races at Churchill Downs will be limited during the coming meeting to twelve horses. Heretofore fifteen horses have been permitted in all starts on the back stretch, owing to the greater width of the track at these points but the Bahr starting gate has only fourteen stalls, and as there are at times an unruly horse or two, the assistant starters need an empty stall to handle them. It is also believed by many that twelve horse fields will provide truer and better run contests, reducing the possibilities of crowding and jostling, not only at the start, but on the turns. In stake races, with a supplementary gate of four stalls, eighteen stalls in all will be available. In the event that the starters in the Kentucky Derby or other stakes should number more than eighteen, the excess number will be started from the outside of the gate."
