Watkins Kentucky Derby Candidate Gallops 1 Mile in 1:40% * Mrs. James Croftons Up Goes Three-Quarters in 1:13*5 at Churchill Downs Course — Track Fast. ♦ LOUISVILLE, Ky., ay 1.— Griffin Wat-kins Insco, one of the leading Western candidates for the Kentucky Derby, turned in one of the best mile works of the season at Churchill Downs Thursday morning when he negotiated the course in l:404r., breezing. With Steve ODonnell up, the son of Sir Gallahad III. and Star Flight, began at the five and a half furlongs pole after walking from the Durnell barn at the head of the mile chute. ODonnells instructions were to let the colt go along easy for the first half mile; send him a fast third quarter, and then take a good hold on him. ODonnell carried out the instructions, and his mount ran the quarter in :25H. the three furlongs in :38, and the half mile in :50%. He then ran the two furlongs in :12, each. Leaving the club house turn and finishing his final quarter he covered it in :26%. The five furlongs were timed in 1:02%, and the three-quarters in 1:14-5. The Post and Paddock Stakes winner pulled up in the best of condition, and the manner in which he went through his trial showed him to be ready for racing. Trainer Durnell intends starting the colt one or two times before the Derby. From a time standpoint, Mrs. James Croftons Up showed the fastest move of the morning. Beginning at the three-quarter post, the son of High Cloud raced to the stand in 1:13-.-,, driving. His fractions were :23v., :35, :47% and 1:00. The Hamburg Places Bosafabo breezed a mile in 1:44%. Beginning at the three-quarter post, the son of Star Master ran the quarter in :26 the half mile in :53% and the three-quarters in 1:18%. Elmer James called on the Elmtree Stables Elcido and Footmark for their first work since their arrival from Lexington. Elcido circled the course in 1:44%, while Footmark went three-quarters in 1:14%. The pair began together and covered the half mile in : 48 :;ti - Footmark pulled up after the three-quarters. Called on for his first brisk trial since his recent ailment, C. W. Hays Scotland Glory, accompanied by Marvin Mays Gunfire, breezed three-quarters in 1:18. After a turn of the track the pair began at the three-quarter post and negotiated the quarter in : 25 -.-,. the half in :51 and the five-eighths in l:034r.. Mrs. H. E. Thomas Farr was the only Derby eligible to be asked for speed at Douglas Park. He went an easy mile, accompanied by James M., in 1:45. Candidates for the Clark Handicap, the opening days feature Saturday, came in for their final breezes at Douglas Park. W. C. and E. W. Reicherts My Dandy and Brown Wisdom were each called on for five-eighths. My Dandy breezed in l:044s, while Brown Wisdom went the same distance handily in 1:02%. Tippy Toe. another eligible from the same stable, was timed five-eighths in 1:07. My Dandy, the first to work, reeled off the quarter in :25%, and the half in :51, while Brown Wisdom went the quarter in :21-.-. and the half in :50. Michigan Boy. the 1930 Louisiana Derby winner, went a handy three-quarters in 1:16. He galloped the quarter in 24. the three-eighths in :31%, the half in :49, and the five-eighths in 1:01%. ,
