- --- ..---------- Here and There on the Turf Brookmeade Jinx Continues " Climax May Have Been Reached Vacation for Roman Soldier Belmont Ends With Big Program . ..j No serious injuries were suffered by Cav-- alcade in his mishap at the start of the Suburban Handicap, in which he stumbled and went to his knees, unseating Johnny-Gilbert, and he will be able to resume training within a few days. This means Robert A. Smith can be expected to point Mrs. Tsabcl Dodge Sloanes star performer . which so far this year has been unable to show a return to his "best form, for the Brooklyn Handicap, historic mile and a furlong event at Aqueduct which will be renewed June 22 with a 0,000 added purse. Cavalcade suffered cuts about the legs, the extent of which could not be determined until the next day. No infection has set in and now Smith sees every opportunity of having Cavalcade back under saddle within a few days. Very probably he is getting walking "exercise now, so the veteran trainer will not be compelled to do much with the four-year-old to have him ready for racing again. 1 Hard luck has pursued the Brookmeade Stable so far this season but the many fol-r lowers of this establishment hope Caval-i cades misfortune in the Suburban was the . climax and hereafter Mrs. Sloanes horses . The Bropkmeade troubles began when Cavalcade went wrong in his preparation, for the Santa Anita Handicap, for which he bad trained brilliantly and was shipped from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast for the engagement. He apparently had outgrown the bruised heel suffered in tfie West and was just round- ing to form agafn for the Suburban. In the- meantime; Special Agent, one of the, stables better three-year-old prospects, collided with another horse while working out at Columbia and, -was .but of training for weeks. So far he has been unable to race to the promise expected of him, perhaps be- cause of that accident. The season is young yet and Cavalcade .has many rfch opportunities awaiting him it he" can shake off the jinx which, has ; pursued him sineff he reported to Smith one morning last August at Saratoga with a quarter crack. After the. .Brooklyn, Cavalcade has the ?25,O00 added Detroit Challenge Cup, which is set for June 29. This event is weigh t-for-age, conditions which should suit the English-bred colt. During July, the Brookmeade flash will have the opportunity ; to accept engagements in the Stars and Stripes, and. Arlington .Handicaps at Arling- ton Park and the Butler Stakes at Empire City. - Each of -these events will carry a 0,000 purse. Gavalcade?s principal objec-l tiVe in August undoubtedly will be the Nar-L ragansett Special, with a. value of either 5,000 or 0,000. He also may be ablc to participate in one, or more of the tradi-Li tional features at Saratoga. Other valUr b able chances will -be, available through the autumn and if he is still going strong, Cay-L alcade may be expected to make another trip to Santa Anita. , Roman Soldier, -which makes up for-the; smallness of his size by his vast courage, now is - enjoying the vacation he so richly L deserves. Phil Reuter and Elwood Sachs-1 enmaier, owners of the son of Cohort and Miamba, by Light Brigade, decided against sending the colt after the Latonia Derby to freshen him up and the month of June may be gone before Roman Soldier is re-1 turned to competition. Even though he came through with a fine performance in 1 the Illinois Derby, being beaten a head as the mile and a furlong was covered in 1:50, Roman Soldier appeared to lack the spark that carried him to a conclusive victory in the Texas Derby and into second place in Lthe Kentucky Derby. His vacation should enable Roman Soldier to be a very formidable member of the three-year-old division later in the season as he has been since the first of the year Belmont Park closes its highly successful and important spring meeting Saturday with a triple stakes program that will see Omaha and Rosemont resuming their feud in the Belmont, most of the better juveniles clashing in the National Stallion Stakes and the outstanding jumpers competing in the Meadow Brook Steeplechase Handicap. Omaha especially is training smartly for his Belmont effort and his latest workout at Aqueduct shows him going over the mile and three furlongs distance in the very good time of 2:21. The rangy son Gallant Fox and Flambino wants distance more than anything else, the Belmont should find him more at ease than in any of his other races this season as he will be running a quarter of a mile more than he did in the Kentucky Derby. Despite his defeat by Rosemont in the Withers, Omaha shapes up as a short-priced favorite for Saturdays race. Neither Maeriel nor Postage Due, which led him to the finish of the Juvenile Stakes, nor Coldstream which be narrowly defeated, are eligible for the National Stallion Stakes so the event appears cut and dried for White Cockade, brilliant youngster in the small stable of Ogden Phipps. With a little better luck White Cockade might have been returned the winner of the Juvenile, but he was bottled up in the late stages of the race yet was only beaten two necks. None of the other eligibles for the National Stal-:d lion has looked so well in public this spring so the son of Diavolo and White Favor will bo a strong favorite to capture the nations most important early season test for two-year-olds. 1 . . l , , . i : ; : ; - i . - J " r B; , I - 1 t y 2 B a f J I J f1 - J v e d d t e e of f :e it y II n Is a f h. s, 3, ss r le le n it te ie 1- ig r ie 3t
