CHALLENGE CUP OPEN RACE Detroits 5,000 Affair May Prove Classic of. Year. Head Play Expected at Motor City Soon to Go Into Intensive Training Azucar on the Grounds. DETROIT, Mich., June 1. The vicissitudes of racing are bringing the Detroit Challenge Cup, 5,000 added, to be run on June 29, up to one of the most interesting sporting events of the entire year. The unfortunate mishap to Cavalcade when he unseated Johnny Gilbert at the start of the Suburban Handicap Decoration Day and his previous defeat by Head Play, leaves the latter two up on Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sldanes champion of last year and puts Cavalcade in the position where he must demonstrate that he is the outstanding horse in the older division. Head Play has come to be known as the giant-killer of the turf as he pops up in .the most unexpected places to overthrow what apparently seem to be outstanding horses. Starting his meteoric career the property of former jockey Willie Crump, he was purchased by Mrs. Silas Mason on the eve of the Kentucky Derby. His defeat in that race and the controversies which followed on the foul riding, of both Brokers Tip, the winner, and Head Play himself, has long since become turf history. Then came his sensational win in the Preakness and after that oblivion. Put in training again for a special try in the Santa Anita Handicap, he failed to make good but has since demonstrated that he is tetill to be reckoned with in any company. If it should happen to become muddy on the day of the race at Detroit he may be counted on to make plenty of trouble for the other starters. He is to be shipped to Detroit within the next week or so and will be given a special preparation over the track. Azucars defeat in the Col. Alger Memorial Handicap at Detroit on Decoration Day has taken nothing from his glory. The horse had been away from racing for three months from an injury received after the running of the Santa Anita Handicap arid Thursdays race will do him a world of good. From now on he will be put into intensive training and as it is jknown that he can run all day, he will be a potential candidate for the race. Discoverys performance in the Suburban when he was giving Head Play nine pounds and a year, shows that he is coming back to the form which stamped him as one of the fastest horses in training in the fall of his three-year-old year. If only Cavalcade, Azucar, Head Play and Discovery get to the race for the Challenge Cup, it will be one of the greatest horse races of the year but it is definitely known that Phil Reuter intends to start Roman Soldier and it is hoped that Mr. Woodward will be induced to send Omaha also for the race.
