AGAWAM MUTUEL HANDLE UP Masses Hundred Thousand Dollar Mark for First Time During Meeting on Week-Day. AGAWAM, Mass., June 10. Sound Money, bay five-year-old daughter of Donnacona, sporting the black and orange silks of Mrs. A.-C. Amendola and saddled by George Com-frey, won the best offering on the mid-week card at Agawam Park this afternoon when she scored a handy victory over the mile a dnone furlong distance of the sixth race. She went the nine furlongs in 1:54 to defeat Miss Alphonso, from the Ambrose Cre-men string by a half length. The latter, in turn, was two in the van of Airway of the R. B. Sanner stable. With the most delightful racing weather of the season, a large crowd was on hand, though there was no important event listed throughout the afternoon. The speculation on the different events ran high and the mutual handle, for the first time on a weekday, ran well over the hundred thousand mark. There was little delay at the gate, with Sound Money beginning right with the leaders and in the run to the first turn she took a slight lead, but jockey Barba wisely took a snug hold on his mounts head while still permitting the mare to race along with the pace. Entering the back stretch, Jim Brown moved up fast on the outside and swung into a half length lead. Sound Money stayed in second place, fighting for her lead. This order held good all down the back stretch to the far turn, where the Amendola mare was permitted to race at her best. Meanwhile Jim Brown had tired and dropped back, then Miss Alphonso made her bid, as did Airway, though the latter lost much ground by racing wide on the turn. Straightening out in the stretch, Sound Money held a three-length lead which stood her in good stead as she began to tire towards the end, and Barba had to shake her up smartly to stave off the closing rush of Miss Alphonso, as the latter steadily lessened the gap that separated her from the daughter of Donnacona.
