HASTINftOA ROMPS TO VICTORY Earns First Purse, of Canadian Campaign in Maple Leaf Handicap, Long1 Branch Opener. TORONTO, Ont., June 10. Hastinola, four-year-old daughter of Peter Hastings and Anola, which races in the emerald green and white colors of Mrs. R. Fairbanks, turned in the first success of her Canadian campaign after two previous failures, and administered a decisive defeat to five other sturdy distance performers to account for the Maple Leaf Handicap that featured the inaugural program of the Long Branch Jockey Clubs spring meeting today. Opposed by five seasoned performers and carrying top weight of 115 pounds, the Fairbanks miss, under a masterful ride by D. Brammer, scored by a big margin when she ran the distance in 1:45 to defeat Park-wood Stables Abbatoro and Miss C. Ba-dames Chrysmute, which finished in a dead heat for the runner-up honors. Trickys Son was fourth over Shoeless Joe and Grainger, the only other starters. For the opening of the suburban course, excellent conditions prevailed for the introduction of the seven-day meeting, and a crowd of good size turned out to watch the program, which proved exciting, especially in the first, second and featured races. Hastinola was first to take up the pace-making in the feature, but Brammer did not have her in that position long during the. early stages. He took the filly under restraint when G. Atkins stepped Shoeless Joe to the front before reaching the final turn, and this move had its bearing on the final result. Hastinola was quick to displace the Smythe gelding when Brammer asked the filly for speed and, going into a lead of three lengths a furlong from home, she kept increasing her margin until she reached the line. Abbatoro and Chrysmute disputed the runner-up position from the top of the stretch and they were in a bitter struggle to finish a neck in advance of Trickys Son, which was gaining fast on the outside.
