SPRINTERS IN THE LIMELIGHT Six of Eight Races at Latonia Monday Over Short Distances. Kentucky Blues Takes Measure of Rivals in Featured Bella Vista Purse to Outlast Dora May by a Neck. LATONIA, Ky., June 15. Sprinters held the center of the spotlight at Latonia this afternoon, six of the eight events presented being dashes with the Bella Vista Purse, at six furlongs, serving as the mafn attraction. The Rosedale Stables Kentucky Blues took the measure of four others in the head-liner, leading practically throughout and just lasting long enough to get down with a margin of a neck over the fast-finishing Dora May. Jane finished third, with Mary Terry and Thatagal next in line. Possessing most speed, Kentucky Blues managed to open up a good lead on Dora May in the opening quarter of the three-quarter sprint, and though quitting badly in the last furlong, succeeded in withstanding the challenge of Dora May. Small fields contested in most of the races on the ordinary card, which was staged under ideal weather conditions and over a lightning fast track. Dixianas Shootin High proved best of the seven two-year-olds that traveled five and a half furlongs in the Hyde Park Purse, secondary feature on the program. The chestnut daughter of High Time Caracena defeated Dr. Menendez by two lengths with Chigre landing iliird money. Taken back off the pace, Shootin High followed in closest pursuit of Dr. Menendez until well straightened out in the stretch and when jockey Charley Stevenson called on the filly she responded in ready fashion. Overhauling Dr. Menendez was not much of a task and once in front Shootin High added gradually to her advantage and had something in reserve when the finish was reached. Shootin High ran the five and a half furlongs in 1:06 flat, three-fifths of a second slower than the track standard for the distance, which is regarded as a fine effort for the Dixiana colorbearer. Coming from far out of it with a great rush, H. G. Shoemakers Gamaliel took the measure of seven others in the first race on the program, a six furlongs dash for platers. Captain Henry finished second, a length behind the winner, while Sunshine Boy annexed third money. Captain Henry displayed the most early speed and set the pace, while Gamaliel plodded along in last place. After turning into the stretch, Gamaliel gained rapidly and overhauled Captain Henry in the last sixteenth, drawing away to win by the safe margin of a length. Belle of Midway, favored in the betting in the field of twelve contestants, came from behind to account for the major portion of the purse in the second event, a six furlongs dash for platers. Golden Mission finished second and Flying Jay came up with a rush Continued on thirtv-eighth page. SPRINTERS IN THE LIMELIGHT Continued from first page. in the stretch to be third. Rated close to the pace set by Golden Mission, Belle of Midway responded readily to hard urging and managed tc overhaul the early pacemaker in the final stages of the contest and won by a half length. Nine met in the third race at six furlongs and Robert S. was returned the winner in a driving finish with Billies Orphan and Harold Wiley in second and third places, respectively. Rushed "into the lead soon after the break, Robert S. showed the way to his rivals for the entire distance but had to be hard hustled in the closing stages in order to withstand the rush of Billies Orphan. The winner was well supported. The fourth event was designed for two-year-old fillies at five furlongs and R. L. Bakers Glowset was an easy winner of the dash, defeating Starry Flag by three lengths, with Lockstep a fast finishing third. Starry Flag displayed most speed from the break but after heading into the stretch, Glowset came up on the rail with a rush and raced into command, winning with something to spare. The bay daughter of Upset performed in a manner that indicated she outclassed her opposition and returned .80 for each investment on the front end.
