The Kentucky sportsman may have been confident of Hollyroods ability to turn back the Detroit Derby field on Saturday, even though Rushaway, which had beaten him handily in the Latonia Derby, was among the opponents, but it is very doubtful that anything his colt did in the Belmont suggested a record-breaking performance over the Motor City course. Under 110 pounds, Hollyrood ran the mile and three-sixteenths in 1:57 to lower by three-fifths of a second the mark set by Cavalcade in winning the Derby two years ago and equalled by Discovery last summer when the Vanderbilt star accounted for the Detroit Challenge Cup. While Hollyroods victoiy is impressive enough from a time standpoint, it hardly was achieved at the expense of a top-notch field of three-year-olds and only a little more than two lengths separated the first six of the eight starters. His stablemate, the filly, Sparta, was at his saddle girth at the finish and at her heels were Tatterdemalion, Tugboat Frank and Split Second, noses apart and Rushaway was only another half length away. Both of the latter had excuses but they may not have been valid enough to have made any difference in the outcome as far as Hollyrood was concerned. The Head-ley colt finished very stoutly after Rushaway had all but collared him at the head of the stretch. A. G. Tarns gelding lost a couple of lengths in lunging into the air at the start, but he apparently was the same keen horse he was in defeating Hollyrood by six lengths in the Latonia Derby, the feat of winning two Derbys on successive days having taken something out of him. Hollyrood and Rushaway may clash again this coming Saturday in the Chicago Derby at Hawthorne but the Headley colt will not have the four pound allowance he enjoyed at Detroit. Out of the Hawthorne race will come the western claimant for whatever three-year-olds honors may be determined in the Arlington Classic which is the next engagement that will lure the top-notch easterners away from home. The latter will see service this week-end in the Dwyer Stakes at Aqueduct, the principals being Granville and Mr. Bones, which staged such a brilliant stretch duel in the Belmont Stakes. The improving Gean Canach, victorious in the Shevlin Stakes, has been nominated for the Chicago Derby, but more than likely trainer Robert A. Smith will keep Mates half Continued on thirty-fourth page. HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page. brother in New York for his Dwyer engagement. Granville and Mr. Bones appear standouts among the three-year-olds still active, now that Bold Venture, Brevity and White Cockade all have been forced to the side-lines because of injuries. Neither Bold Venture nor Brevity will run again this year, but White Cockade, victorious over Brevity and Mr. Bones in the Withers, may be up and about in time for the Classic. Clang and Myrtlcwood, those persistent rivals at midwestern tracks last season, were soon in victorious roles Saturday, the former turning back a good field in the Carter Handicap at Aqueduct and the filly outrunning some capable speedsters in the Hawthorne Sprint Handicap. Under 110 pounds Clang proved too formidable for Sation, Cycle, Good Gamble, Good Harvest and Observant over the seven furlongs distance. Sation was called upon to give the New Orleans gelding twenty-two pounds but found the task beyond his powers even though ridden in a manner calculated to make his job as easy as possible. Reserved off the early pace, the G. D. Widener veteran made his run through the stretch but found that Clang had opened up too much of a lead through the final furlong to be overtaken. Myrtlewood, top-weight of her field, with 119 pounds up, stepped to the front with a fast early pace, opened up a long lead in the stretch and had plenty left at the end. Roman Soldiers march through the ranks of older horses was halted in the Rockingham Park Handicap, in which the courageous four-year-old son of Cohort and Miamba found his impost of 133 pounds too exacting over a mile and one furlong of dull going. Winner of his four previous starts this season at distances of six furlongs and a mile and one-sixteenth, carrying 126 pounds on three occasions and 132 pounds in his last outing, Roman Soldier just was not quite good enough to run down Gallant Gay and Good Goods in the Rockingham. Gallant Gay, a three-year-old son of Galetian with a fondness for soft going, had won his two previous starts at the Salem course, but got into the handicap under an impost of 101 pounds, which according to the scale, amounted to a concession of twenty pounds from Roman Soldier. Good Goods was getting seventeen pounds from the son of Cohort, yet the latter was beaten only a length and a half for all the money. Roman Soldier was far from being disgraced by his first defeat of the season and as long as the medium-sized colt isnt asked to carry the grandstand, he always will give a good account of himself.
