RAIN FOR SUFFOLK OPENING Track Sloppy for First Program at East Boston Plant. Go Quick Makes Stretch Rush to Account for Pilgrim Handicap llasto Filly Outsider. EAST BOSTON, Mass., June 15. Go Quick came from far back in the stretch to carry the. banner of B. N. Kane to victory in the Pilgrim Handicap, the six furlongs sprint which featured the opening day program at Suffolk Downs when this course opened its doors for its long summer meeting this afternoon. F. A. Smith brought the Haste filly up on the extreme outside at the sixteenth post, and she was drawing away at the end to beat Mrs. A. Phillips Jair by two lengths. Speed to Spare, coupled with Sobriety as the A. G. Vanderbilt entry, was third, a length back of the runner-up. Suffolk Downs had a rainy day for its inaugural and the track was sloppy. However, some 12,000 fans turned out to witness the sport, and it was much more of a betting crowd than the ones that patronized Rockingham. Speed to Spare began fastest in the Pilgrim Handicap, with Miss Merriment and her stablemate, Sobriety, right after him. The trio raced as a team for the first eighth, with Miss Merriment between the Vander-bilt horses. The latter drew to the front at the quarter and led by a head until the half, where Sobriety came from third place to take the. lead. Go Quick, which had been rated fourth by F. A. Smith, moved into third place as they rounded for home. Miss Merriment was carried wide on the turn by Sobriety, and at this stage Speed to Spare moved up to third place. Both Jair and Go Quick made their moves at the head of the stretch, and at the sixteenth post the winner began to draw away. Jair moved up very fast in the stretch but could not match the victors late speed. Speed to Spare also" finished gamely but was unequal to the task of beating the first pair. The winner ran the distance, in 1:14. in the slop and earned ,315. She was one of, the outsiders in the field of six, showing 6.80 in the "tote." W. Elliotts bay Chance Play mare, Miss Careful, found a field that was particularly well to her liking, and a track that was more so. She jumped to the front at the word "go" and led her opponents for the entire distance of a mile and a sixteenth, which she negotiated in 1:49 flat. She was the popular choice, returning 9 to 10 in the "tote." Sanctity, from the E. A. McManns string, was the one to finish second, six lengths back.
