Doubtful starter. 4 With Hollyrood and Sparta, winner and runner-up respectively in the Detroit Derby, in shipment here for the race and other of the candidates safely through final rigorous training, a field of ten, including all the best three-year-olds in the West, is in prospect for Saturdays tenth running of the 5,000 added Chicago Derby at Hawthorne. In addition to Hollyrood and Sparta, which are owned by Hal Price Headley of Kentucky, others regarded as certain starters are Rushaway, property of A. G. Tarn of Winnipeg; Tatterdemalion, hope of the young New Yorker, C. V. Whitney; the Texas candidate, Tugboat Frank, which races for J. L. Roberts of Houston; A. Pelleteris Doran, a New Orleans entry; Carvola, three-year-old ace of the stable of E. K. Bryson, a Marylander; E. W. Duffys Detroit entry, Sir Jim James, and Holl Image, lone locally-owned candidate, from W. E. Schmidts Superior Stable. TWO FILLEES NAMED. This field includes two fillies, Sparta and Carvola, and their audacity to tackle the line-up of formidable males ready for the mile and one-quarter race is proof sufficient that they rank among the best of their age and sex. The Headley entry and Rushaway, winner of the Latonia, Illinois and Louisiana Derbys, are the favorites. Rushaways triumphs in the Latonia and Illinois Derbys were scored on successive days, a feat without parallel. Under an interpretation of the conditions governing the race as made by the stewards Thursday, Hollyrood will carry 121 pounds and not 126 pounds as steward and racing secretary J. G. Reeder had announced. Stewards C. W. Hay and C. J. FitzGerald ruled otherwise. Hollyroods impost will match the weight taken up by Rushaway while Holl Image, Bow and Arrow, Doran, Sir Jim James, Tugboat Frank and Tatterdemalion will race under 118 pounds and the fillies under 113 pounds each. Candidates completing their more important training Thursday included Rushaway, Hollyrood, Sparta. Tugboat Frank and Tatterdemalion The latter two received their final stiff preparation at Hawthorne early Thursday morning while Rushaway worked between races at the same track during the afternoon and the Headley pair were adjudged ready following workouts at the Detroit Fair Grounds. HOLLYROODS FINAL PREP. . Drilling on a muddy track and with the older Whopper as a companion, Hollyrood travelled a mile in 3:43, the quarter in :24t3, half mile in :49 and three-quarters in l:15f.. Unaccompanied Sparta covered a like distance in 3:44, the quarter in :261s, half mile in .52 and three-quarters in 1:18. Neither of the three-year-olds was extended. Making his first appearance before Chicago turf fans since he scored in the Illinois Derby at Aurora, Rushaway, with jockey J. Deering on his back, appeared on the; course during the intermission between the third and fourth races. Coming through Continued on third page.. FIELD OF TEN NOW CERTAIN FOR CHICAGO DERBY Continued from first page. with a splendid work as Deering directed him over a mile in 1:40, the Tarn racer made more secure his ranking as one of the choices, if not the favorite, for Saturdays race. He traversed the first quarter in :25, half mile in :49, three-quarters in 1:15 and, after completing the mile, galloped out an additional furlong in 1:54. Trainer Jack Healey sent Tatterdemalion the full Chicago Derby distance while Tugboat Frank went one mile. With a good track beneath them they worked well, though Tatterdemalion had a very easy gallop. Going the mile and one-quarter in 2:17 he worked under stout restraint all the way. Fractional time for the long drill was, quarter in :27, half mile in :55, three-quarters in 1:22 and mile in 1:49. Encircling the eight furlongs of the west side Course in 1:43, Tugboat Frank ran the quarter in :25, half mile in :50 and three-quarters in 1:16. The Duffy hopeful, Sir Jim James, arrived at the local course from Detroit early Thursday morning. Accompanied .by a stable pony he made the trip by motor van and was unloaded by trainer G. R. Miller. This son of St. James conquered Rushaway in the Detroit Derby Trial but was riot named for the Detroit Derby, nominations having closed before he showed his form in the Trial. As the colt is not ready for such a hard test, the Northway Stable, which had named Valiant Fox, runner-up to He Did in the Santa Anita Derby, will not be represented in Saturdays stake. Trainer D. E. Stewart has not arrived at a definite decision regarding Mrs. P. A. B. Wideners Dnieper, which was beaten in the Derby Trial Handicap, won by Bow and Arrow Tuesday, but with a fast track prevailing, the Philadelphia-owned gelding may be a starter. Dnieper finished second to Brevity in the Florida Derby.
