Here and There j on the Turf J j Discovery to Accept in Brook- J lyn j I Weights Please Reuter J Airflame Proves He Has Class J j Ran Good Race in Tremont j Discovery will accept the impost of 136 pounds assigned him in the Brooklyn Handicap by John B. Campbell if Alfred Van-derbilt and J. H. Stotlcr are of the same notion a week hence as they are at the present time. They naturally are not very happy about sending their star out under such a load, but the son of Display and Ariadne is in top condition now and his connections see nothing to be gained in waiting on future stakes. Campbell issued his weights after seeing Discovery run a mile and one furlong in 1:50 under 135 pounds in the Inchcape Handicap and evidently was satisfied that last years handicap champion was ready for a supreme test. That Discovery would be given such a high impost generally was expected, but speculation was rife as to how Campbell would treat him in comparison with Roman Soldier. He makes them ten pounds apart, or nine on the scale, Discoverys assignment being that much over the standard. In the Rockingham Park Handicap last Saturday, Roman Soldier was beaten by Gallant Gay and Good Goods, while carrying 133 pounds. Discovery was allotted 136 for the same race, the distance of which was a mile and a furlonc like the Brooklyn. Campbell differs with H. D. Monroe, the Rockingham handicaoper, in the relative merits of the two horses, making them ten pounds apart against three. The shift pleases Phil Reuter, trainer of the Cohort four-vear-old. much more than it does Vanderbilt and Stotler. but Discoverv intends to try for his third Brooklyn Handicap victory and if. successful he will be the only horse ever to gain that achievement. In fact, he is the onlv twn-timo winner of the historic event. That King Saxon is not regarded as highly at nine furlongs as formerly by Campbell, is indicated in his inmost of 122 pounds. C. H. Knebelkamps veteran, which will be inactive for ouite some iime due to a foot injury, carried 127 pounds in the Brooklyn a year ago pnd was assigned 126 pounds in the Queens County Handicap, a mile affair. Discovery shouldered 123 pounds in winning the 1935 Brooklyn in which he set a new worlds record of 1:48 for the distance, since broken by Indian Broom. When he won the race, two years ago the Vanderbilt star had up 113 pounds, one under the scale for a three-year-old. It is noticeable that Bold Venture and Granville, too-notchers of the division this season, are in the Brooklyn under 110 pounds each, or four under scale. Granville may be regarded as a likely starter and otherwise the field may be expected from amomr Discoverv, Roman Soldier. Firethorne 120, Good Goods 114, Good Haryest 112. Clnng 110. Gallant Mac 106, Teufel 103 and Palma 100. The son of Ariel and Flamante was deprived of his regular rider when Johnny Bejshak was injured in a previous race that day, and in the Juvenile he was caught between horses for a good part of the straight run, and this must have taken something out of him. Since the Juvenile, Sammy Ren-ick has had ample opportunity to learn the colt, which was apparent in the Bronx lads handling of Airflame in the Tremont. He had the colt away smartly and in the clear, and even though Airflame was given strong opposition by Fairy Hill, to which he was giving five pounds, he drew away in the final furlong. In fourth place was Scintillator, winner of the Juvenile Stakes. Airflames triumph was worth ,650 and placed Ariel back on top of the leading two-year-old sires, insofar as earnings are concerned. Pompoons victory in the National Stallion Stakes gave Pompey the ranking, but Ariels best son got back of the job again to add the Tremont to his triumph in the Juvenile Championship Stakes at Santa Anita Park and three purse events" at the western cxurse. Now that Vanderbilt and Stotler are satisfied that Airflame has class as well as speed, they may go ahead with the plan of reserving the colt for the Arlington Futurity, which is his most .important engagement of the year. Although quite a few other stakes open to him are on the calendar between- now and the Chicago fixture, Airflame may pass them up so as not to run the risk of being knocked out through injury or some other cause.
