GLEEMAN BY SAFE MARGIN John Hay Whitneys Colorbearer Wins Chief Race at Aqueduct. Triumphs Over Santa. Anita Derby Winner lie Did, Wifch Valeviclorian Third Bain and Mud. NEW YORK, N. Y., June 18. John Hay Whitneys Gleeman, barely beaten by Gean Canach in the running of the Shevlin Stakes, came back to win todays best offering of the QueensXounty Jockey Club at Aqueduct. He won with plenty to spare over Mrs. Silas B. Masons He Did, winner of the Santa Anita Derby, and another of Mrs. Masons performers was third when that part of the purse went to Valevictorian, with Patsey Begone a distant fourth. Rains of the forenoon and showers during the running of the races made the going muddy, but a good crowd was out and first class sport came with the decision of a card of seven races. This victory of Gleeman came in a six and a half furlongs dash confined to the three-year-olds, and the field was scratched down to six starters. Patsey Begone beat the others away from the stalls, but Gilbert sent Gleeman after her so swiftly that he was soon in a commanding position and he was destined to hold it for the rest of the sprint journey. As Patsey Begone was headed by the son of Royal Minstrel, Danise M. was the one to move into second place and she was soon racing at the heels of the Whitney colt, and i He Did was not far back of these, but the Whitney colorbearer was going along smoothly under a slight restraint by Gilbert as he held his position. Gilbert made a good turn into the long straight of the stretch and there Wright made his first move with He Did to go into second place. For an instant the son of Victorian appeared a danger, but Gilbert had only to shake up Gleeman to have him jump away, and at the end he was going easily to win by three lengths. He Did had taken second place by a length and a half and Valevictorian had come from far back to take third from Patsey Begone, which was plainly outclassed in the company. Danise M. was far back of that filly and the only other starter was Ampersand. This victory completed a double for Johnny Gilbert, for he had scored earlier with Good Trade. The Draconis Handicap, of a mile and a sixteenth, engaging those of Class C in the graded handicaps, proved comparatively easy for I. J. Collins Paradisical, which led from end to end to score by three lengths over Mrs. A. A.. Baronis .Ann ORuley, and third went to Mrs. -Wiiliam Ziegler, Jr.s Esposa when she led North Wales II. over the line. Paradisical, at home in the muddy going, was sent into a daylight lead from a good start and simply romped along two lengths clear most of the way, increasing her lead in the final furlong. Ann ORuley was as consistently second, and she hung on well when put to a drive in the last furlong. Mrs. Elmer Truemans Trojan filly Good Trade found the muddy going much to her liking, and she was a comparatively easy winner over maidens, of her own sex and age in the opening five furlongs dash. H. F. Louchheims Harrys Dream was the only one to offer- anything like contention and she took second place by five lengths from Janeen that raced for the Carthage Stable. The start was a good one, and Good Trade at once went to the command, and Harrys Dream went after her closely. Harrys Dream hung on well until well inside the final sixteenth, where Good Trade drew out to be winner by a length and a half. Amangansett won his third straight through the field for Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs when he took the mile and three-quarters over the hurdles. He carried 163 pounds and was doing his best at the end to beat John Hay Whitneys The Immortal II., with Anderson Fowlers Navarino, ridden by his owner, finishing a distant third before St. Francis. The second race for juvenile fillies, over the five furlongs route, brought victory to Dunlight, which races under the silks of Mr. Pembroke. The Sage Stables Black Witch took the place with Totem Pole, from the Brookmeade Stable, beating Santa Barbara for third. From a good start, Miss Cohere was first to show the way, but at the turn Workman had taken command with Dunlight and the Dunlin miss was good enough to splash home the winner by two lengths. Black Witch was always in a forward position and hung on well to beat Totem Pole a length for the place. Santa Barbara finished strongly. Time Me went exceedingly wide all the way, losing much ground, and Miss Cohere, after her early flight of speed, weakened badly. Sophia Tucker, from the Orienta Stable, was winner of the third race, a five furlongs dash that engaged juvenile fillies when - she scored rather easily over William Du-I ponts Staraway and Mrs. Silas B. Masons 1 Richmond Rose took third from Maecloud. This brought about the defeat of an odds-on choice when Swiftply had no share in the purse. There was an excuse for the Vanderbilt filly for right at the break she and Maecloud collided, and as a result both were knocked back badly. Pat Rox, Edward Bronson and Al Braham of Saratoga Springs were among the visitors Thursday afternoon.
