Denemark entry. j Illinois owners, who annually have been playing a more important role in American racing since the enactment of legislation favorable to racing in this state, celebrate their biggest day of the Hawthorne meeting foday. The occasion, a more or less "homecoming" at the course of the Chicago Business Mens Racing Association, will see the Illinois Owners Handicap up for its seventh running in as many years since it was founded by the late John C. Schank, who as head of the west side course did much to elevate and increase the popularity of the sport. Of fifteen nominated for the stake, which is reserved for horses owned by bona fide residents of the state, twelve were named through the entry box Friday, and, including such stars as St. Bernard, Corinto, Forever Yours, Chasar, Spanish Babe, Threadneedle, Holl Image and others, a great contest is in prospect. Gyral, Prince Torch, Silent Shot, "Understand and Brown Feathers complete the field as drawn Friday. The race will be decided over nine furlongs. Of ten owners represented, nine are residents of the city of Chicago. St. Bernard, owned by E. Dale Shaffer and winner last year of the Hawthorne Handicap and Saratogas Kenner Stakes, is favored to add this ,000 added fixture to his record, but with 118 pounds on his back and competing with such formidable company the task before him is one of the toughest he has faced. STRONG OPPONENTS. Corinto, winner of the Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs and among three named by Mrs. E. Denemark, is ready to meet St. Bernard and the others under the same testing impost as the probable choice. Having trained just as impressively as St. Bernard, the Denemark ace is expected to come through with the finest performance of his career. Chasar, another named by the Denemark stable, is near the top. He will have up 115 pounds. Brown Feathers, the third member of the Denemark entry, is not expected to start. Repeating his sparkling effort in the Chicago Derby, in which he finished third to Hollyrood and Carvola, W. E. Schmidts Holl Image, which will carry 110 pounds, may be fighting it out with the leaders. Other certain strong contenders include the fillies Forever Yours, Spanish Babe and Thread-needle. While only three years old, Forever Yours and Threadneedle are top-notchers in their class and the older Spanish Babe qualified for tomorrows race with a pair of victories over classy fields during the meeting. Forever Yours must shoulder 112 pounds, while Spanish Babe is assigned 113 and Threadneedle 107. Continued on thirty-fourth page. ILLINOIS OWNERS HANDICAP HAWTHORNE FINALE Continued from first pagej Forever Yours is owned by Mrs. Ethel V. Mars; Spanish Babe by Mrs. F. M. Grabncr, and Threadneedle does her racing under the silks of Morris Vehon. While not so highly regarded, F. Abbatea Prince Torch, C. W. Bidwills Gyral, J. E. Hughes Silent Shot and Mrs. M. E. OTooles Understand will have supporters and, should a muddy track prevail. Silent Shot, a splendid mudder, may be one of the choices. Starting with Martie Flynn, winner of the first running, the stake has been won by Chief John, My Dandy, Indian Runner, Dust Girl and Top Dog. Featuring the closing program of the Hawthorne meeting, its seventh running may be witnessed by one of the largest crowds of the thirty-one day season at the Cicero trade.
