STAR BESS, off none too fast, was lucky to get through an opening on the inside in the first quarter and, . shaking off LUCILLE H. while saving ground in the stretch, drew out, but tired near the end and pulled up slightly lame. WHAT A PAL took a prominent place soon after the start and, forging to the front when ready, won easily. MILES STANDISH was never far awav and had no excuses. CARLUE had speed and raced .well from the start. MISS SAVAGE tired a trifle "in the stretch. GREAT MEADOWS was permitted to drop back to last place soon after the start, raced around the field to reach a prominent place on the stretch turn, but after being forced to race beyond the middle of the track on the turn, was permitted to swerve in behind horses in the stretch and had little chance with the ride. The latter raced wide while making his move and, finishing on the outside of the winner, might have won had his rider attempted to save ground. FLAGHORN saved much ground on the stretch turn and raced fairly well to the end. SWEET JOE was in close quarters repeatedly under timid handline. VISHNU tired badly in the stretch. MONTMARY rwas bothered slightly rounding the first turn, then -raced up strongly in the back stretch to open up a goodlead ,pn the stretch turn, but was unable to resist the first two.
