ILLINOIS ILLINOIS OWNERS OWNERS HANDICAP HANDICAP HAWTHORNE HAWTHORNE FINALE FINALE Discovery Discovery and and Roman Roman Soldier Soldier in in Brooklyn Brooklyn Handicap Handicap DIFFERENCE IN WEIGHTS Vanderbilt Star Asked to Concede Ten Pounds to Rival. Two Running Companions for 1935 Handicap Champion Aqueduct Reviving Astoria Stakes. NEW YORK, N. Y., June 26. For the final Saturday of the Queens County Jockey Club meeting at Aqueduct tomorrow afternoon, a remarkable program will be offered, topped by the old Brooklyn Handicap and with the revived Astoria Stakes for two-year-old fillies as a companion feature. The Brooklyn is a gallop of a mile and a furlong to which 0,000 is added and with six named to start it will have a gross value of 6,325. The Astoria is a sprint of five furlongs with an added money value of ,500 and ten going to the post as is promised, it will gross ,675. The Brooklyn is rich in racing tradition since its first running in 1887, and that famous finish of Dry Monople, Blue Wing and Hidalgo. Like many another of the prizes of the Queens County Jockey Club it is an inheritance from the old Brooklyn Jockey Club that conducted its sport at the Graves-end course, now a residential part of Brooklyn. The running this afternoon will bring about a meeting between Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Discovery and Elwood Sachsen-maiers Roman Soldier, which, from all he has shown, seems to be the greatest rival of the son of Display. Handicapper Campbell has asked Discovery to take up 136 pounds against the 126 with which Roman Soldier is burdened and it is generally agreed that the race lies between these two top class handicap performers. But the Vanderbilt silks are to be carried by two others so those popular colors will be on just half of the six-horse field. Besides Discovery there is Good Harvest, winner of the Metropolitan Handicap and the third is the filly. Good Gamble. This is a formidable band, but naturally the stable hope is in Discovery. Should this magnificent son of Display be the winner it will be his third consecutive score in the prize. Last year, carrying 123 pounds, he was winner over King Saxon and Omaha, which is now in England adding to his laurels, and as a three-year-old in 1934, Discovery took Continued on twenty-fifth page. I DISCOVERY AND ROMAN SOLDIER IN BROOKLYN Continued from first page. the measure of Dark Secret, which was destined to win The Jockey Club Gold Cup later in the year, breaking down fatally in that race. For this renewal Discovery has shown a complete readiness with a recent performance at the mile and a furlong distance when he was an easy winner, carrying 135 pounds. Since that public performance he has done all that has been asked of him by trainer Stotler and he promises to go to the post at the top of his form. But Roman Soldier has been racing brilliantly in New England and the son of Cohort will have a big following this afternoon at the difference in the weights. Ten of the best juvenile fillies that have been shown this year arc named from the eligibles for the Astoria which is being 1 revived, its last previous running being in 1 1932. I Of the ten named, James Fitzsimmons will saddle three in Dizzy Dame, Devils Pace and Drawbridge. Another coupling is that of William Dupont, the pair being Staraway and Manatella. Mrs. Bridges remarkable bargain filly, Goldey F., is of the company and a recent victory of the daughter of Tall Timber, she has only been beaten once in eleven starts, proclaimed her right on edge. She makes up the top weight of 122 pounds but is well-equipped for that burden. Another miss of big importance is Regal Lily which races for Walter M. Jeffords. Sophia Tucker is the candidate from the Orienta Stable and Joseph E. Widener is represented by Premiere and the other named is Mrs. Silas B. Masons Richmond Rose. From such a field there is sure to come a worthy revival of this famous old prize that had its first running in 1902. I
