DETROITS ,000 RACE Pontchartrain Handicap Attracts Whopper, Azucar and Others. Stand Pat Slated to Carry Equal Weight With Alger Star Whopper at Top. DETROIT, Mich., June 26. Whopper,one of the leading handicap stars of the country, makes his Detroit debut tomorrow in the ,000 added Pontchartrain Handicap, the main attraction of one of the most attractive programs offered since the opening. The son of Pharamond II., a double stakes winner this year and one of the leading money winners last season, will carry top weight of 122 pounds, four more than the burdens assigned F. M. Alger, Jr.s Azucar and E. F. Seagrams Stand Pat. Following this crack trio in line of weights is Hal Price Headleys Preeminent, a sta-blemate of Whopper, which will carry 107 pounds. Marynell, which has yet to show the brilliant form that carried her to two stakes victories during the Arlington Downs meeting, will tote 104 pounds and then follows Sir Jim James, the only three-year-old in the field, under 100 pounds. Sir Michael, under 98 pounds and Pokeaway, under. 96 pounds round out the small field of eight that will run one mile and a sixteenth. Continued on seventeenth page. Azucar has yet to win a race over the local track, but he was a close third to Polar Flight and Woodlander, in the Col. Alger Memorial Handicap. Stand Pat won the Wolverine Handicap. Supporting the feature is the Tucker Handicap for three-year-olds. Six of this age were named for the six furlongs sprint with Pelerine, a double winner here, assigned the top weight of 118 pounds. Ros-selli comes next under 116 pounds and Beth Bon follows under 114 pounds. Seven two-year-olds, a majority of which will be named for the Woodward Stakes, one of the features for closing day, meet over five and one-half furlongs in the fourth. Yellow Tulip will carry 118 pounds, with Little Upset and Planetoid assigned 115 pounds each. In addition to the eight races, racing secretary Webb Everett has carded a substitute to be used in the event it is necessary to discard one of the original events. Cloudy weather prevailed today but tho forecast is for clear skies for tomorrow and in that event another large gathering is expected.
