GOOD FLAVOR PAYS LONG ODDS Record Long Shot Winner for Present Suffolk Meeting. Finishing Powers of Jockey Griggs Big Factor in Triumph of St. James Gelding Favorites Fail Backers. r-: BOSTON, Mass., June 26. Charlie Griggs, the best stretch rider in New England, brought the longest priced horse of the Suffolk Downs season home in the featured New England Turf Writers Handicap here today when he piloted Good Flavor to victory a neck in advance of Bobs Boys. The winner set the pace all the way, but Griggs had to go to the whip to get the St. James gelding home in front. W. Elliotts Miss Careful was one of the numerous favorites which failed their backers today. She wound up third, beating Mountainy Man by half a length for that award. Easy Sailing finished fourth in the field of seven. Griggs began in front and, knowing that he might get hemmed in if the white boys had a chance, whipped his mount along in front for the entire distance. The H. P. Metcalf campaigner was failing fast under him in the final drive, but he managed to hold her together long enough to take the decision. Bobs Boys was cleverly rated by F. A. Smith to take second place. They moved up gradually, but never could overhaul the pacemaker. Smith put up a hard, lashing finish, but the top horse was too much for him. Miss Careful, the choice, failed to run to expectations, but she had little competition for the show award. Mrs. M. Morins Balapin, ridden by F. A. Smith, who is in excellent form these days, came from behind the pace to win the second, a six furlongs dash. At the end, the Olambala gelding was two and a half lengths clear of Mrs. Anna Briguglios Sandbroom, with the well meant Old Veteran, from the Branncastle Farm Stable, third. Mrs. Li. C. Whites Dean Swift came home in the third, showing the way to the heavily played Epibeau by a neck in a stirring finish. The latter, from F. T. Blaisdells stable, had no excuses. He got to the lead on the turn and appeared a winner as they rounded that bend. He was found wanting in the drive, however, although Anderson put up one of his best rides. At the finish of the three-quarters he was driving hard to defeat Pharatime by a length for the runner-up award. Bacon, hard ridden by Griggs, finished fourth. Anotherone graduated from the maiden ranks in the fourth event when he carried the silks of E. Barry Ryan home half a length in front of A. G. Vanderbilts Bristle. Almont Stables Moth Ball was third, three lengths back of the runner-up. Mixwell, which was in contention from start to finish, ran fourth and Beau Thor, from the Willis Sharpe Kilmer stable, one that was backed into odds-on favoritism, failed badly. Brown Top, from the combined Lowen-stein and Grayson stables, was ridden to an easy victory in the sixth when Johnny Longden had him home five lengths in front of W. E. Snyders recent claim, Discourse.
