P0MP00N STANDOUT IN NEW ENGLAND FUTURITY Acknowledged Champion of 1936 Juveniles to Rule Favorite Victory Today Will Crown Colt Largest Money Winner of Year Ten Named to Strive for Rich Prize Capacity Crowd Expected PAWTUCKET, R. I., Oct. 27. Pompoon, champion of the juvenile division, will make his first and only New England appearance in the Futurity at Narragansett Park tomorrow, a stake which will gross 1,260, providing seven of the ten named overnight go to the post, and be worth 7,910 net to the winner. Victory for Pompoon will place the colt at the head of the money winning horses of the year, supplanting Granville, which holds the coveted position at the present time. Jerry Louchheims colt stands out in the light so far that defeat does not seem possible. In fact, it appears that he can take a little the worst of it in the way of racing luck and still" come through triumphant. All indications point to Pompoon ruling an overwhelming favorite. The skies were bright and sunny this afternoon, and if the weather continues fair for the next twenty-four hours, the inaugural Futurity in this sector will be run under perfect conditions. If it should rain and the going is muddy that will not impair the chances of Pompoon, for he worked in sensational style through such going on Saturday, though all his races have been over fast tracks. Dan Clarke "opened" up Pompoon this morning when he sent the bay colt three-eighths in :37?4. He was going handily all the way and pulled up a half in -J51. As racegoers should be well aware, the Pompey youngster travelled a mile in 1:40 in the mud on Saturday, bringing despair to the owners and trainers of other candidates. ONLY ONE DEFEAT. Turf followers should be thoroughly familiar with the champions record, which Is marred by only one blemish, that a defeat at Saratoga Springs, when No Sir, favored by a fourteen pound weight pull, gained a half length decision over the Philadelphian. However, it was not the weight disadvantage but a poor ride that brought about his downfall. Pompoons cluster of six victories includes the Belmont Futurity, Junior Champion and National Stallion Stakes all being decisive and clean-cut scores. In those specials he vanquished better youngsters than he will oppose tomorrow and, since he is in wonderful condition, there is no reason to assume he will be any less powerful in the New England Futurity. Jerry Louchheim was fortunate in being able to obtain such a first class rider as "Sonny" Workman after the Laurel stewards suspended Harry Richards for rough riding. DOGAWAY READY. The Milky Way Farm of Mrs. Ethel V. Mars has named three, Dogaway, Reaping Reward, and Minstrel Show. The last named is rated doubtful, while the other two are certain to go, barring of course, the unforeseen. Robertson, the stables contract rider, is scheduled to handle Dogaway, indicating they consider his chances brighter than those of Reaping Reward which will be under the able guidance of Stevenson. The two Milky Way youngsters did handy miles on Monday in their extended finals, the first named in 1:42 and the other in 1:43. Pompoon has faced Dogaway twice, finishing six lengths in front of the Bull Dog colt in the Belmont Futurity and being four In advance of him in an overnight event at Aqueduct Rudie, a home-bred in the barn of Bill Continued on thirty-fourth page. On that occasion he was only airing as he completed a mile in 1:39. He could have bettered those figures had he been driven out The race was as recent as last Friday and yesterday he cantered a mile in 1:43, handily all the way. Knott, who hanr died him for the first time in his last start, again is slated to be in the saddle. OCEAN ROLL OUTSHJER. The lightly campaigned Ocean Roll, who has started only four times, winning two and finishing second in his other races may be better than generally rated. However, after trainer Buddy Hirsch had seen Pompoon work his sterling mile, he expressed little confidence in the chances of his charge to beat the champion. The son of Strolling Player and Rough Sea, like the others, will be in there battling for that ,000 place money. Thats as good as a stake this time of the year. Jewell Dorsett has been entered overnight and may go to the post after all, though she does not appear at her good early season form. Pompoon will not be the only Futurity winner to go to the post at Narragansett Park tomorrow. In one of the six furlongs claiming races that make up the excellent mid-week program, Kerry Patch, which won the big race at Belmont Park in 1932, is slated to oppose middle class platers. Though the New England Futurity seems at the mercy of Pompoon, that hardly will deter the customers from turning out in large numbers. Hes a champion, which never has been seen in action by racegoers in these parts, and a champion always packs em in.
