KNOWING IN SPLENDID IFFORT Completes "Double" for Mrs. Ci 0. Iselin at Empire City Ovandh Orient Express Also Scores for Sportswoman Spirited Contest for Minor Awards In Feature Event. YONKERS N. Y. Oct 27. Knowingrcar-ried the silks of Mrs. C. Oliver Iselin to victory in the five and three-quarter urlongs of the Elmsford Handicap at the Hill Top course today. This gave the fair owner a "double," for earlier In the day Roy Waldron had sent out Orient Express to win the opening event, and little Alfred Cooper also shared in the "double," for he had the mount on both. Back .of the son of Dunboyne in the sprint handicap there were four so closely lapped that the camera was called upon to make the decision, and a photograph revealed that "Mr. Nightingales" Billie Bane took the place from Sunport, and Stubbs just took fourth from Bright Haven. Thi3 was one day when the patrons were thankful the Empire City Association stands face the afternoon sun, as it was cold, and the sunshine tempered the day. A big crowd was out for the sport. With little delay at the start the seven engaged left on the same stride and, while Knowing was first to show in front, he soon gave way to Stubbs, and Bright Haven followed the pair, with Billie Bane in fourth place, but well back of these. Plchon was caught napping with Sunanair, and he was off slowly and trailed all through the running. KEPT UNDER RESTRAINT. . Cooper was content to follow the pace of Stubbs with Knowing until the stretch turn was reached, where he circled around the sonof SirGallahad III. to take the lead. Billie Bane, on the. outside, was moving up steadily when; Sunport lost a deal of ground as he rounded into the straight. In the run homeKnowing held the others perfectly safe to be over the line winner by a length, and Billie Barie barely saved the place, with Sunport charging along for a close third. Stubbs was quitting badly, as was Bright Haven, and Sunanair was closing at the end. though he finished last. Buckley M. Byers- Thorson, game son of Son o Battle, after forcing all the pace in the KentCliffs Handicap, was winner of the mile and one-sixteenth gallop when he outlasted Mrs. L. H. Nimkoffs Beefsteak and Townsend B. Martins Steel Cutter, while back of these came Sun Archer and Her Reigh. This was a race all the way and Eddie Arcaro, who piloted Thorson, played an important part in the score. He sent the chestnut colt along with Beefsteak under slight restraint, and they raced like a team as they showed the way through the back stretch. Her Reigh and Steel Cutter followed, with Sun Archer bringing up the rear. Steel Cutter had the inside position, where he accepted the deeper going, and Her Reigh was racing on the outside. Beefsteak hung right to Thorson into the stretch and he still had his head showing in front a furlonp out, but there Arcaro, timing his move magnificently, called on Thorson for his best and he gradually drew out to be winner by three parts of a length. Beefsteak" had saved second place from Steel Cutter by a length, and both Her Reigh and Sun Archer faltered badly when put to pressure in the final quarter. Mrs. C. Oliver Iselins Orient Express left the maiden class in the opening five and three-quarter furlongs dash for juveniles when he asily led: home Maxwell Howards Gloom Buster, and third went to Crafty Fox that raced for the Saratoga Stable. After the finish Dabson, who had the mount on Gloom Buster, lodged a claim of foul against the winner, which was not allowed. W. R. Coes Old Maid was much the best of the maidens that raced in the mile and seventy yards of the second. This was fashioned for all ages but only one three-year-old appeared, Count Up, the others being two-year-olds. Far back of the daughter of Apprehension, second place went to Maxwell Howards Daytonlan and Mrs. William Zieglers Dickery Dock was a close third before Spicy. ALERT AT START. Old Maid had the outside stall in the field of a dozen that raced but Anderson broke her so alertly she was able to cross to the inside before the first turn was reached without impeding any of the others. Once out in the lead Old Maid raced away to an early lead of four lengths and she simply galloped along in front to be over the line the winner by eight lengths. Anderson brought home his second winner of the day when he rode Comer Covingtons Idle Midget in the third. In this, the son of Infinite was reserved back of the pace to come on to victory while in other races he has been rushed out to stop when the stretch was reached. The placed horses finished closely lapped, with G. D. Wideners Candlelight taking the place in the closing strides and then came High Mabel, Whisk Party and Yetive. The camera was called upon to make the decision among these and the photograph gave them in the order named. High Mabel was tiring as the stretch was reached and Idle Midget slipped through to come on and be. winner by half a length. Candlelight had been forced to lose some ground in the stretch but finished resolutely to be second and Whisk Party also finished so strongly she would have beaten High Mabel in another stride. Bravo Caruso had tired badly to drop out of contention.
