t j. Here and There r on the Turf j Pompoon May Gain .Earnings Title N. E. Futurity Is Rich Prize Bottle Gap and War Admiral to Meet Again I Also Count Arthur and Memory Book Pompoon, regarded by many observers as the best horse of any division seen in competition this season, has a wonderful opportunity this afternoon to become the biggest money winner of the year. All the bay son of Fompey and Oonagh, from J. H. Louchheims stable, has to do is is to live up to expectations and capture the first running of the New England Futurity which, with 5,000 added by the Narragansett Racing Association, will have about 0,000 for the winner. Pompoon must carry top weight of 122 pounds for the mile and one-sixteenth event, and he will not have the familiar services of Harry Richards in the saddle as that elongated knight of the saddle is taking a vacation at the instance of the Laurel stewards. Nevertheless the Louchheim colt will rule a very strong favorite because of his record, which numbers six victories and a second in seven starts, including the National Stallion and Junior Champion Stakes, as well as the Belmont Futurity. The New England Futurity will mark the first effort of Pompoon at a distance, beyond six and one-half furlongs, this being the length of both the Belmont Futurity and Junior Champion, but hardly any one has any notion that the son of Pompey can not go the route. In ail his victories he was drawing away at the finish, while in the race he 1 lost to No Sir, he was bearing down heavily at the end. Furthermore, he showed an exceptional trial or two at one mile for the Belmont Futurity and has done the same recently in preparation for this afternoons engagement If anything. Pompoon is regarded as a better prospect for the route than any of his likely opponents, and if he is unable to live up to his prestige in New Englands most important event for the youngsters, it will be something of a calamity. Although Pompoon will be doing his running this afternoon in Rhode Island, much interest will be shown in his performance, particularly at Laurel, where he was in training following his notable Belmont Futurity victory. Another reason why Maryland racegoers arc partial to Pompoon is that he be-tran his career at Pimlico and he will probably winter at a farm in that state, in which his owner has an interest, but many enthusiasts of that section are wondering if both Bottle Cap and War Admiral might not have cood chances to beat him. The Glen Riddle Farm youngster which easily defeated a good field, including Bottle Cap, in the Eastern Shore Handicap only to lose to him in the mud in the Richard Johnson Handicap, also went eight furlongs over the week-end, being timed in 1:41. Unless something special is arranged, however, neither Bottle Cap nor War Admiral will have the opportunity of meeting Pompoon, because he is headed for retirement after his race today. He already holas a decision over the son of Man o War, gained in the National Stallion when the, latter was still unbeaten, but he has not met Bottle Cap, as the Bostonian colt lacked engagements in the richer events. The Jenkins promises to find Bottle Cap the favo.-ite as he long has shown a disposition to o a distance and Saturdays race presents hici with the first opportunity to run beyon six furlongs. He also is an excellent mudder as was shown in his Johnson triumph as well as a victorious performance in the Saltan Cup Handicap, at Detroit. Bottle Cap also may quit for the season after this week, but he likely will be trained for the Santa Anita Derby. Count Arthur may have the opportunity Saturday at Laurel to gain revenge for the unexpected defeat handed him by Memory Book in the Breeders Stakes, at Keeneland, last week, as both horses are regarded a3 likely starters in the Washington Handicap, Laurels closing feature. Mrs. John Hertz steady four-year-old wasnt quite equal to the task of running a hard race on Saturday and another on Wednesday with a twenty-four train ride in between, and the Greentree Stable three-year-old handled him rather easily in the Breeders Stakes. Then Memory Book attempted something of the same sort when he was rushed to Laurel to run in the Maryland Handicap, and he was compelled to drop a close decision to Flora-dora. The latter had one less day in between and a shorter journey. Both should be fresh, however, for the Washington, which, with 0,000 added, is well worth winning. Against them may be arrayed Bow and Arrow, Time Supply, Dark Hope, Fair Knightess and Roman Soldier, so the race may prove as thrilling as many of its predecessors.
