t CHURCHILL DOWNS NOTES 4 : : In addition to quarters for the Kentucky Derby candidate. Grey Gold, Edward W. Duffy, Detroit turf patron, has asked stalls for Sir Jim James, Captain Byam, Court, Belleek, Que Gato, Blonde Reel and the two-year-old Steel Knight, all of which will do their racing under the Duffy colors. The juvenile is a son of Bright Knight and Sister Ship. Greatly advanced in training, the entire stable promises to be ready for campaigning here. Duffy purchased Que Gato from Mrs. S. Bryant Ott here last fall. The stables of Lou Unger and J. Allgeyer, among recent arrivals from the south, unloaded at Douglas Park. Having worked a brisk mile Just before leaving Santa Anita a week ago, the respite from hard training being enjoyed by Gerald will not set him back. "I plan to resume his derby preparation within a day or two," said trainer Williams, Monday. "He came here a fit horse and will be ready. His health could not be better." Mose Goldblatt is expected today from Cincinnati, where he has been at his home since Sunday. He shipped five here from Miami, and had two here throughout the winter and will soon take up three two-year-olds which wintered at Lexington. Jack Westrope, who topped the American riders list in 1933, is expected to report to Bert B. Williams, trainer of Mrs. W. H. Fursts stable, here at Churchill Downs. This stable will start Gerald in the Kentucky Derby. Jockey Charles Kurtsinger leaves Wednesday for Maryland, where ho will report to the E. Dencmark establishment, under trainer B. S. Michcll. Kurtsinger has been resting at his farm near here. Preceding his stable here from Hot Springs, R. L. Stivers personally saw to it that quarters for his horses were in readiness. The Stivers horses will unload at Churchill Downs. C. N. Finch, veterinary, owner and trainer, and J. F. ONeil, owner, both of Jefferson-ville, Ind., returned from Hot Springs. Finch has seven, which he had at Oaklawn Park, at his Indiana farm, but will transfer Surveyor, Barbara J. and Pat C. to the Downs within a short time. Finch announced that the apprentices, Robert Hutton and J. W. Wilson, are to ride at the Keene-land and Downs spring meetings. The two young riders are under contract to the Indiana turfman. Both rode their first winning races at the Oaklawn Park meeting just closed. Reconditioning of barns at the Downs, where all of the older structures have undergone close repairs from top to bottom and end to end, has been completed. Several new barns have been added since the previous meeting. With the return of fast or firm track conditions, schooling of two-year-olds will start at Churchill Downs. Several of starter William Hamiltons assistants will put the young thoroughbreds through this important part of their preparation for racing.
