I THREE-YEAR -OLD PROSPECTS OF 1937 BROOKLYN, bay colt, by Blue Larkspur Knockaney Bridge; the ! property of the Idle Hour Farm of Col. E. R. Bradley. He has been second choice for the Kentucky Derby in all the future books ever . since the entries were announced. Late in T. J. Carrolls book he has superceded Pompoon as the favorite. All reports from Ken-I tucky are that he is training well and has developed into a grand i individual. j By NOKBIS HOYDEN : Brooklyn has been proclaimed by Col. Edward R. Bradley as his fifth Kentucky Derby winner, and the master of Idle Hour Farm has good reason for making the statement. That others have high opinion of the colts prospects is indicated by his position in the several future books being made on the Churchill Downs classic, one of them having the son of Blue Larkspur and Knockaney Bridge co-favorite with Pompoon. Offered for sale at Saratoga two years ago, Brooklyn was bid in for 0,000, the highest price noted for a yearling in this country since the boom days. That Colonel Bradley had a fair idea of what he was doing was demonstrated in the manner in which the colt performed last season. Slow in coming around, Brooklyn did not make his first start until the middle of August at Saratoga, where he was a well-beaten fourth in a maiden affair taken by Galsun, with Night Bud second, and Casinghead third. Although running greenly, he displayed considerable promise. He was waited on for another six weeks and came out again at Laurel to take an overnight event at one mile in which he stood a long drive to defeat the seasoned Tattered by a head, while Uneasy was third. His time of 1:39 was satisfactory enough for the Laurel track. Taking up his weight of 122 pounds in the Pimlico Futurity, the Blue Larkspur colt gained steadily through the stretch to finish a length and a half back of Privileged and Matey, and he was awarded second money when the Calumet Farm colt was disqualified. Brooklyn suffered some trouble in the mile and one-sixteenth event or he might have fought it out with the others in their close battle. Called upon to shoulder 116 pounds in the Walden Handicap, which was also over the mile and one-sixteenth route, Brooklyn was on top of the pace from the beginning and drew out in the final furlong under a strong drive to defeat No Sir by a length. Miss Mary Hirschs youngster, which had taken a decision over Pompoon at Saratoga, was in receipt of four pounds, while Yellow Tulip, Night Bud and Clodion were others behind him. Clodion had been made the favorite on the basis of his Jenkins victory over Bottle Cap. Brooklyn then was returned to the farm in Kentucky to winter and begin hi3 preparation for the Derby along with Billionaire, his speedier stablemate. However, he is considered the superior prospect to go a distance of ground by virtue of what he displayed in his few starts as a two-year-old. The Bradley colt has not been hard raced, and he is in splendid condition to go through the long, hard grind necessary to have him in top condition for the Derby. In being trained by H. J. Thompson, he is under the care of a man who knows more about developing a Derby winner than any other. Of good size and splendid type, Brooklyn leaves nothing to be desired in his breeding. His sire. Blue Larkspur, was perhaps the best horse ever to carry the Bradley colors, winning the Belmont Stakes and other races. Brooklyn himself is a brother to Blood-root, which would have won the Coaching Club American Oaks, but for permitting her stablemate, Black Helen, to have that honor. His dam, Knockaney Bridge, a daughter of Bridge of Earn and Sunshot. by Carbine, is a sister to Sunbridge. dam of Windsor Lad, winner of the English Derby. Brooklyn may not only win the Derby but he may develop into the three-ycar-olcl champion as well. Peter Pan Commando S f Black Toney Cinderella 2 iBelgravia . Ben Brush S J I Bonnie Gal fLavcno ..
