CHIGRE LOOKS PROMISING May Be More Than Mere "Dark" Horse in Kentucky Derby Owner Credited With Victory. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 6. Again warning that he may be something more than a "dark" horse among candidates for the sixty-third Kentucky Derby and demonstrating that he is possessed of more than ordinary speed, Chigre, Hamilton C. Applegates Peter Hastings gelding, worked four furlongs in :48, over a fast but deep track at Douglas Park, Sunday morning. The trial, the fastest for the distance by a "wintered" candidate in this section, kept the locally-owned three-year-old in the forefront in the training picture, a position gained when he worked a mile in 1:42 at the same track a little more than a week ago. Between the two fast workouts, trainer John Jones breezed the Applegate horse a slow three-quarters; Successful in three of nine engagements, including the Cincinnati Trophy last year, Chigres record does not discredit him, especially when it is taken into consideration that a mild sickness contracted early in July did not leave him at his best for August appearances at Washington Park. Put away for the season early, he wintered exceptionally well and, judging from what he has displayed this spring, is much improved. His owner has experienced the thrill of seeing his colors carried to victory in the coveted Churchill Downs race. Old Rosebud, superlative son of Uncle and among several geldings to win the fixture, performing under the Applegate silks in 1914, turned back Pebbles, Sharp Shooter and four others in 2:03, a record for the race that stood until 1931.
