S. G. BAKER TO RIVER DOWNS Former Lexington Turfman Has Fifteen Horses in String. Stable Wintered at Cumberland Park, Nashville, Tennessee Juveniles Have Received Preliminary Training. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 13. Fifteen horses that Smith G. Baker will campaign this year are to be transferred from Cumberland Park, Nashville, Tenn., where they were wintered, to River Downs on April 25, the former Lexington turfman stated while on a visit here. "The horses wintered fine during the mild winter season in Nashville, and should not need much additional preparation after their arrival at River Downs," Baker stated. The Baker string consists of nine old horses and six two-year-olds, and, according to their owner and trainer, the juveniles have shown him enough to impress him with their chances for developing during the summer. The older horses of the group includes Ginocchio, Yantis, Jack W., Decourcy, Janice, Cherokee Red, Glowset, Kentucky Jane and Sis Quinlan. YOUNGER SET. In the younger set, all of which were broken and received their preliminary training even to the point of schooling from an improvised starting gate, is made up of Litton Hickman, b. c, by Bostonian Jane Williamson; Black Bass, br. c, by Justice F. Catherine Stuart; Broadus, ch. c, by Justice F. Peggy Lehmann; Helen Mac, b. f, by Rolls Royce Dangerillo; Norkie, ch. f, by Fair Wind Helen Bond; McAllister, ch. c, by Greenock Victoire. Broadus is believed by Baker to be the best of the juveniles, but one or two others have shown to good advantage in preliminary trials at the old Tennessee track. Jockey Frankie Grill will report to Baker at River Downs. He is slated to do all of the riding for this establishment during 1938. Detroit and Thistle Downs, following the close of River Downs, are the tentative itinerary of the Baker stable. Another stable that was wintered at Cumberland Park is the Rosedale Stable, in charge of trainer George White, which numbered twenty-five head, the majority of which are two-year-olds. The Rosedale Stable is scheduled to break up winter quarters on April 18 and head for Suffolk Downs and a campaign on the New England tracks during the summer. Jockey Tommy Dickinson accompanies the shipment.
