W00LF0RD STRING LARGEST Kansas City Turfmans Stable Composed of Band of Forty. Trainer Ben Jones Arrives at Louisville and Expresses Satisfaction Over Condition of Horses. LOUISVILLE Ky., April 13. The Wool-ford Farm stable of Herbert M. Woolf, Kansas City sportsman and business man, is the largest single establishment quartered at Churchill Downs, and when it is fully assembled may embrace more than forty thoroughbreds. Trainer B. A. Jones, veteran Missouri horseman and one of the most successful in his profession, has thirty-seven head under his care at the famous Louisville course, and this powerful array may even be augmented by a few additions from the Woolf farm before the local season gets under way on April 30. Jones arrived himself from Florida several days ago and was pleased to find that the horses he shipped from the Everglade State as well as those which came from Hot Springs and the Woolf farm are in excellent physical condition. LAWRIN AT HEAD. Heading the Woolf string, of course, is the Kentucky Derby nominee Lawrin, which got in Wednesday from Florida, where he captured the rich Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah Park. Lawrin is a fine big horse, and although Jones is making no forecasts about the crack three-year-old in relation to the D"erby, it is no secret that he has high hopes for the son of Insco, which has developed considerably since his juvenile campaign last year. The stable also boasts another Derby eligible in Joe Schenck, which, however, has not displayed the quality of Lawrin. Incidentally, Jones has full juvenile sisters to each of the Derby candidates. A full sister to Lawrin, whose dam is Margaret Lawrence, is Unerring, while the two-year-old Naadja, like Joe Schenck, is by Insco and Stitches. Both these youngsters, along with several of the stable companions, have been made eligible for the Debutante, and the Bashford Manor Stakes, the two stakes on Churchill Downs spring calendar exclusively for two-year-olds. Woolford Farm made no nominations to the Kentucky Oaks, but it has eligibles for all of the other stakes to be run here this season. The stables older stakes performers are Robert L. and Rifted Clouds, while other juvenile stakes nominees in the establishment are Sherron Anne and Inscoelda, named for both the Debutante and Bashford Manor, and the colts Technician and Double Dip, nominated for the Bashford Manor. GOOD YOUNGSTERS. Other youngsters in the stable are Onugo, Quick Change, Finella, Spin On, Spirit Queen and Beau Insco. Rounding out the list of older performers are Escohigh, White Ginger, Dokas, One Jest, Buddie Treacy, Inscomira, Prince Alone, U Demon, St. Moritz, Belle Insco, Top Billing, Escolee, Black Mischief, Brilliant Rose, Incredible, Personable, Seldina, Star Reporter, Jubilesta, Belle Sharmeer, Commentator and Legenda. This stable is one of the most pretentious on the American turf, and the Woolf silks are expected to play a conspicuous part in the spring season at the local course. Attached to the Woolf establishment Is apprentice Clayton Perkins, whose contract was purchased during the Hot Springs season, and he already has reported to trainer Jones, William Whitley, a former jockey, is acting as business agent for the stable and will handle Perkins engagements.
