THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1938 i UN EGRET Chestnut colt, by Sun Briar Polly Egret; owned by A. C. Compton. Trained by H. G. Bedwell. By NORRIS HOYDEN andrm Egrets position in the final standing of the three-year-olds depends upon his ability to go over a distance of ground. A. C. Comptons colt already has demonstrated that he is a colt of extreme speed and a weight carrier, but in his lone test over anything resembling a distance of ground he faltered near the end. Perhaps he will develop more stamina, and tha capable veteran, H. G. Bedwell, can be expected to give Sun Egret further chance to become a stayer or otherwise he will be shut out in his efforts to share in the major purses. The son of Sun Briar and Polly Egret, by Polymelian, was one of the more prominent performers at Santa Anita this winter, winning a pair of stakes there but failing to last in the Santa Anita Derby. His effort in that mile and a furlong event was very capable just the same as Sun Egret was beaten only a length by Stagehand and a half-length by Dauber after he had set the pace until well into the stretch. He did not start in the Santa Anita Handicap. Prior to the Santa Anita Derby, Sun Egret had scored four straight victories at the -Arcadia course after having run second in his first two starts there. Three of his triumphs were in the Santa Maria Stakes, San Pasqual Handicap and San Vicente Handicap, in the latter of which at seven furlongs he took up 125 pounds and defeated Legal Light to which he was giving seven pounds by a neck, while Sir Raleigh was third and Specify fourth. The track was slow but his other Santa Anita outings were over a fast course. As a two-year-old the California-owned colt went postward ten times, winning his third start, which was at Suffolk Downs, and his last, at Bowie, at the expense of some capable older horses, including Mucho Gusto. In between he had been nosed out by Joe Schenck and had run third to Lavengro and Lawrin. The Sun Briar speedster already has begun his major season campaign by capturing the Rowe Memorial Handicap over the six-furlong route at Bowie. With 114 pounds on his back and top weight according to the scale, Sun Egret negotiated the muddy going fast enough to take the measure of such capable older sprinters as Clocks, Higher Cloud and Wise Prince, just as he had Clingendaal, Speed to Spare and Aneroid in the San Pasqual. Sun Egret may be expected to try for the Chesapeake Stakes, Havre de Graces spring contribution for three-year-olds, and if he can get over the mile and one-sixteenth distance of this 5,000 added race in safe fashion, trainer Bedwell may be tempted to send him after the Kentucky Derby, in which he could, at least, be expected to give Tiger an argument for the pacemaking role. The writer doubts, however, that Sun Egret will make the grade, and that he should he reserved for sprints or engagements over the middle distances. Against opponents , of fair ability, he would be a tough colt to catch, but Stagehand and Dauber proved in the Santa Anita Derby that they could do it. That race was a furlong shorter than many of the important three-year-old specials to come. Royalty is very evident in Sun Egrets breeding. He is by Sun Briar, one of the best sires of the generation, which has gotten some excellent stayers headed by Sun Beau, but also many good sprinters and middle distance runners. Sun Egret was from Polly Egret, a stakes winner whose sire, Polymelian, got mostly sprinters. The second dam is by Friar Rock, which tends towards stamina, but speed seems Sun Egrets forte. f fSpcculum Speculum , fAmphion J !
