5 BRANSOME DEFEATS INVOKE Wheatley Stable Miss Triumphs in Prudery Purse at Jamaica. Uallno Wins Second Purse of Meeting for G. D. Widener Ching-Ling Graduates in Second. NEW YORK, N. Y., April 21. Bransome, one of the most highly regarded two-year-old fillies of last season, returned to competition under the familiar yellow and purple blouse of the Wheatley Stable at Jamaica today and gave a large off-day gathering a thrill when she whipped J. M. Roeblings Invoke a nose in a long stretch duel. The gray home-bred daughter of Royal Minstrel went to the post favorite at 9 to 5 over seven other three-year-old fillies meeting under allowance conditions at three-quarters and the effort was a corker when she finished out the three-quarters in 1:12. Third, three lengths back of the battling leaders, Howe Stables Rissa led Dorothy Owsley by a liberal patch of daylight after establishing most of the early pace. Bransomes score marked the second straight for a three-year-old filly and favorite saddled by "Sunny Jim" Fitzsimmons, as he started Belairs Ana-flame to take the secondary feature. Bran-some was handled and very well by Johnny Longden. Sunny skies and a good card brought out another large off-day gathering to the grounds of the x Metropolitan Jockey Club. In the featured Prudery, Invoke, Rissa and Bransome were quickest to leave George Cassidys station and it was a three-horse race virtually all the way. Rissa assumed the pacemaking duties and drew out and length in front of Bransome and Invoke in the short run to the turn out of the back stretch. However, it was evident on the turn for home that she had yet to meet the sternest tests and swinging into the short front patch Invoke and Bransome swarmed down on her in earnest: Throughout nearly the full length of the stretch Invoke and Bransome battled it out stride for stride, with Gilbert getting plenty out of Invoke. However, she. wasnt quite: good enough, while Rissa was an easy third. George Wideners Uallno won his second race of the meeting when he led rather a good band of platers in the mile and a sixteenth race which was the fifth offering. Cleaveland Putnams Somali raced to second place, with Mrs. F. K. Hastings Old Story taking third from the South American, Pen-dencierb. The only other starter was Steeple Top and he cut no figure in the running. GETS FAST START. Uallno was troublesome at the post and he was banished to a position outside of the stalls. It was no handicap for him. As the field left Wright sent him away with a rush that saw him safely showing the way around the first turn. In the hack stretch he increased his lead to three lengths, where he was eased slightly as Wright took hold of his head. William H. Gallaghers May R., making her first start of the year, was winner over the three-year-old platers that met in the opening six furlongs dash. She had to show a degree of courage and fitness to lead home Hymie Biebers Shadytown, and that one in turn only beat Cuckoo a nose for the place. The start was a rather ragged one, with Sweet Adeline leaving so slowly as to have no chance. Ching-Ling, a juvenile daughter of Cohort and Never Again, which raced under the silks of G. N. W. McNaughton, proved best of the maiden fillies that met in the second race. This was a five furlongs dash and it was the first appearance for several of the starters. The place went to Hugh W. Jacksons Banner Girl and at her heels Donita M., from the Longchamps Stable, was third. Donita M. had started before, but the other two were appearing under silks for the first time. Hugh Fontaine, trainer for the Brook-meade Stable, reported that eighteen yearlings, twelve colts and six fillies are at Up-peryille, Va. Nine of the youngsters are by Cavalcade.
