: t SITUATION AT NARRAGANSETT Dooley, New General Manager, Is Voted Yearly Salary of 5,000, Plus 0,000 Expenses. PAWTUCKET, R. I., April 21 At a meeting of Narragansett Racing Associations directors, held late yesterday, judge James E. Dooley, who succeeds Walter OHara as president and general manager of the Rhode Island course, was voted a salary of S25.000 a year, plus 0,000 expenses. OHara, ousted from his post by Governor Quinn of Rhode Island, received an annual salary of 0,000 and expenses of 5,000. In the meantime the Rhode Island racing "situation took an unexpected turn as the deposed OHara joined forces with Governor Quinn, his arch enemy a few months back, in seeking a referendum on the Rhode Island racing bill. The referendum measure was recently killed in legislative committee by a vote of 5 to 4. Governor Quinn made another plea for the referendum yesterday. RIGHT TO VOTE. OHara stated that he was working with Quinn in this matter in order to "take the race track out of politics." He stated it as his belief that the people had a right to vote again on racing, even though he stood to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars if the referendum resulted in outlawing the sport. OHara was represented at the directors meeting by his brother, Neal OHara, Boston newspaper man, who allegedly controls some 75,000 shares of the 350,000 Narragansett shares that are said to remain in the OHara family group. Neal OHara proposed that the directors bar contributions to political parties, make all offices full time jobs and select manual laborers from the relief rolls of the state. He was out-voted. The Rhode Island senate was to be called upon today to discharge the special legislation committee from any further consideration of the referendum bill.
