PLANS SPRING FIESTA DAY River Downs Course at Cincinnati to Be Thrown Open to Public Next Sunday. CINCINNATI, Ohio, April 27. With the arrival of judge Joseph A. Murphy, dean of American racing officials and director of racing at River Downs, scheduled within the next forty-eight hours, the official family of the popular Cincinnati track will be complete and, with the exception of a few minor details, everything is practically in readiness for the twenty-three-day spring meeting opening Wednesday, May 4. Sunday was a busy day at the up-the-river track and saw van after van bring in many horses that will participate in what gives every promise of being the best meeting offered since the construction of the track in 1925. Thoroughbreds of the higher grade fill the stalls and local fans are assured of a good grade of sport throughout the meeting. President Peter A. Horback, of the River Downs Racing Association, announced Monday that a spring "fiesta day" will be held at the up-the-river course next Sunday afternoon. All of the turf fans of greater Cincinnati and nearby towns are invited to attend the celebration. There will be no admission charge. In addition to the high-class thoroughbreds many saddle stars will be seen swinging into action when the opening bugle blows. Among them Sammy Williams, who is rated as one of the leading apprentice riders in the country, now riding at Keeneland and who showed fine form during the winter meetings at Miami. He will do the bulk of the riding for the J. C. Ellis establishment and will report here at the close of the Keeneland meeting. C. Mojena, clever Cuban jockey, has been engaged to ride for H. Torriente during the meeting. The lad from Havana rode with great skill at New Orleans during the winter and if he can continue to show the fine form he displayed during the winter, local fans will witness him booting them home with great regularity. Charley Stevenson, leading money rider at the Downs last year, will be on hand to ride the powerful aggregation the Dixiana Stable is shipping here, and with Stevenson on hand, a lively battle for riding honors during the entire meeting should result.
