SIM WINS FOR BOMAR STABLE I Displays Best Form of Season in I Feature at Havre. Conquer, Strong Favorite for Oakton Handi- S cap, Defeated in Thrilling Finish-Sun Mica Buns Third. HAVRE DE GRACE, Md., April 27. Displaying his best speed of the season, Siam, e four-year-old Jean Valjean Loveliness colt a from the Bomar Stable, scored his first vie- t tory of the year when he defeated a shifty j band of distance performers in the Oakton E Handicap, which served as the principal of- t fering at Havre de Grace, Wednesday. Carrying level weight of 114 pounds, with Mrs. Louise Viaus Conquer, which was in- 3 stalled a top-heavy choice for the race that was fifth on the mid-week program at the Harford County track, the victoi-y, one of the many exciting finishes that resulted dur- ing the course of the day, came at the imme- diate expense of the Viau gelding, which j marked the fifth consecutive failure for choices. Third in this was obtained by A. E. 1 Munyers Sun Mica, while Master Lad, Red Jack, Careful Miss and Wilfrid G. completed the field of seven that met in the feature. - THIRD 1938 START. Siam was making his third start of the j season, and had a good following for the ; race, despite his last effort, when he fin- 1 ished in last place. He had the services ; of jockey A. Shelhamer, who is fighting for 1 honors as the leading rider here, and he , made his presence felt early in the contest, when he sped along in fourth position while Red Jack and Conquer stepped out in the van positions. Racing on the outside, the Bo- . mar colt was steadied while the duel of Red Jack and Conquer carried them out several lengths before Master Lad, who was holding third place. Reaching the final turn, Conquer had driven to the front when Red Jack called it a day, but Siam had begun his charge and was in second place, just a length back of the favorite. With the stretch reached, Conquer still held command, but Siam was lapped alongside and Sun Mica behind the two. Waging a terrific battle from the furlong pole, Conquer and Siam became almost deadlocked, and it brought them to the line so closely locked that the ; camera was necessary to determine the result. ANOTHER FADLURE. Roman Lady, from the H. P. Metcalf stable, beaten off at short odds here a few days i ago- through interference, confirmed that ; performance with a great deal more racing ; luck, when she finished last in the field of : six which met in the Shenandoah Valley Purse, a test of one mile and seventy yards for three-year-olds that was the fourth and L secondary offering. Ruling as the favoi-ite, , a position she held in her last effort, Roman t Lady was beaten by each of her opponents as Teddy Weed, from the Tomara Stable, , turned in a front-running victory to drive home before Mrs. E. A. Sextons Irish Moon, , while E. R. Bradleys Bar Fly took third in 1 the small field. An upset marked the initial offering of the day, which was the daily test for juveniles, when F. J. Vollmers Polydor filly, Polly Fair, beaten in two local starts, chalked up her second victory of the season, to triumph x In a thrilling finish. With five of the eleven t starters reaching the line with little more than a length separating, them, Polly Fair, coming from sixth position, beat P. H. " Faulconers Miss Omar, a first-time starter, by a short head, while Our Chuckie was I f;hird, beaten the same distance, to take the , measure of Ann Mbwlee, and the others. VETERAN WINS. Another exciting finish came with the running of the second race, which brought a x dozen better than average sprinters into a contention, and it saw Golden Vein, veteran 1 sprinter of the Mrs. P. D. Lee Watts stable, ; register his second victory at the meeting , here. In a blanket finish he took the meas-K ure of C. R. Fleischmanns Early Times, with Lady Maryland third as Cornwallis and Wise King figured in a dead heat for fourth. Golden Vein ruled a lukewarm choice for the g race and he was considerably best to come from a rear position to score by a neck. Cheap platers, recruited from the lowliest distance performers on the grounds, furnished " the contention in the first of the long distance contests run as the third race and " in this another upset occurred when Phantom L" Fox scored for A. Bronza. Marking his s second winning score of the year the five-year-old !" Gallant Fox gelding defeated Liberty Lane Stables Durwrack in a driving finish, as Patient Saint lasted to be third d over James Boy and the four others at the e close of a mile and a quarter. Beaten off in local competition which began at Bowie, the victory of the A. Bronza gelding was a sharp surprise when he forced the pace of Mariato in the early running, then battled along nicely after gaining the lead to land over the last line with a length and a half margin.
