JACOLA VINDICATES SUPPORT Triumphs Over Rivals in Uniontown Purse to Justify Heavy Backing in Laurels Main Race. LAUREL, Md., Oct. 7. Under a skillful ride by jockey M. Peters, Edward Friendlys swift-running filly Jacola, rated as best of her sex in 1937, was winner of the Union-town Purse, an allowance affair fashioned for three-year-old fillies that served as the main attraction at the grounds of the Laurel State Fair, Inc., today. Ruling a top-heavy choice at 7 to 20 in the race, which was fifth on the program, the shifty daughter of Jacopo vindicated the heavy support she received when she mastered her filly rivals in handy style to mark up her second victory in three starts this season, the only defeat coming in the Ladies Handicap, decided at Belmont Park before coming here. The Uniontown was a dash of six furlongs, and six others opposed the brown miss. Mrs. E. Truemans home-bred Toddle On took down second money as G. D. Wideners Court Dance led home Rissa, Dixie Lad, Harriet Ann and Tilaana, the only others under silks. Jockey M. Peters, who was victorious astride Dorothy Pomp in the first race, had Jacola away from the stalls in front after the start and he wisely avoided the swift early pace supplied by Toddle On and Court Dance by permitting his mount to rate along in fourth place, just a little more than a length back. Racing on the outside to miss any chance of being interfered with, Jacola was close enough to prove a threat at the first asking, and midway of the turn she sped past Tilaana, to be lapped on the pacemakers. Rushing up boldly at the stretch turn and getting one lash of the whip on her flanks, the Edward Friendly filly readily overhauled Toddle On, to be in front at the final furlong post, after which she drew out to score by two and one-half lengths in 1:12. Toddle On, holding on well, beat Court Dance by one length for second place, while an equal distance away Rissa held a wide margin over the others. With the track drying out slowly from the rains of Thursday, better time was shown over the previous afternoon. The attendance was of average week-day size.
