YANKEES WIN 5 TO 2 Capture Third Straight Victory Over Cubs in World Series. Monte Pearson Allows Only Five Hits and Strikes Out Nine Gordon, Dickey and Marty Hit Homers. NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct. 8. The New York Yankees defeated the Chicago Cubs here today 5 to 2 to capture the third straight game of the world series before a crowd of 60,000. Monte Pearson, who pitched for the Yanks, was the star of the game, allowing the Cubs only five hits, striking out nine and being especially effective with men on the bases. With the bags loaded in the first inning he struck out Reynolds and Hartnett to get out of a tough spot, and again in the third, with two on, he whiffed Reynolds and forced Hartnett to pop up. Joe Marty again carried off the honors for the Cubs. He made three of the five hits off Pearson, and the one in the eighth inning was a rousing home run that landed in the center field seats. While the "big guns" of the slugging Yanks remained rather quiet, Joe Gordon, the brilliant second-baseman of the worlds champions, smashed out a home run in the fifth inning that started the downfall of Clay Bryant, who had held the Yankees hitless for the first four innings.
