DOWNS DROPS DAILY DOUBLE" Combination Pool to Take Place of Louisville "Double." Col. Matt J. Winn Inspects Derby Trade-Leading Eastern Stables Malie Stall Reservations. LOUISVILLE, Ky., Oct. 8. One of the first tracks to adopt the "Daily Double" system of wagering, Churchill Downs, will become the first to drop. Always ready to give the public any innovation for their benefit and as ready to discard it when the patrons tire of it, Col. Matt J. Winn, president of Churchill Downs, announced today the "Daily Double" would not be used at Churchill Downs during its seven days fall meeting commencing Saturday, October 29. The combination pool, which has proved so popular at Latonia and Chicago tracks, with a value of 00 or more, will be used in its place. As Churchill Downs will offer only seven races on week days and eight events on Sat-j urday, the provisions of the pools have not ! been decided upon. j During the past two years Col. Winn has checked on the "Daily Double" and its effect on wagering on the races necessary to com-. prise it. A charity day program at Latonia j was the deciding factor. The pool at Latonia and Churchill Downs comprise the second and third races and wagering for the first three races at Latonia charity day was far above that on other day3 at Latonia when the "Daily Double" is in operation. WINN. PLEASED. After his announcement, Col. Winn made a tour of inspection of the Derby course and , checked the applications for stalls with Tom Young, track superintendent. He was I agreeably surprised to find that some of 1 the leading eastern stables planned on taking in the short season and in addition to i accommodations for the Kentucky Jockey ; Club Stakes candidates, had asked for stalls for other performers. I That the Jockey Club Stakes will remain as one of the leading juvenile stakes, is seen in the number of two-year-old eligibles for the mile test. Many of the eastern owners plan on shipping their charges to Keeneland for the Breeders Futurity and will stay in Kentucky until after the running of the Jockey Club Stakes. The victory of Porters Mite had little bearing on the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes. The Porter offspring was not eligible for the Downs classic, while several I which followed in his wake are expected for I the stakes to be offered on the closing day of the meeting. I Although he has furnished four Derby 1 winners, Col. E. R. Bradley has yet to have a juvenile win the fall classic and with i such worthy eligibles as Benefactor and Balmy Springs, in addition to Big Hurry, t Basswood, Big Pebble and Boysy, the Blue Grass sportsman holds a strong hand in the 1938 renewal. EL CHICOS RIVAL. Despite his defeat in the Futurity, Johnstown is still considered second only to El Chico as the leading juvenile of the year, and T. M. Dorsett, bred at Jack Howards Rookwood Farm, near Lexington, Ky., lost none of its prestige in the iruturity. Olney has been returned to the Blue Grass and is now quartered at Lexington. Those remaining eligibles for the ,000 added which is expected to gross 5,000, are Foxlane, Joharie, Johnstown, Steel Heels, Bang, Figaro, Ten Caret, Big Hurry, Bass-wood, Benefactor, Balmy Springs, Big Pebbles, Boysy, Lanceman, Boycott, Search, Copilot, Marilu Dream T.
